Yahoo decided to kill off their existing messenger and replace it with something that is universally regarded as a steaming pile of crap. I appreciate Eion's, dequis's and others' efforts to integrate it into Pidgin, but after trying to for with it for a couple of months I gave up and managed to convince most of my buddies to use XMPP instead. As for ICQ, you can register on https://icq.com/join, but you must give them a mobile phone number to send you an SMS. Since I am reluctant to give them this information, I am not on ICQ.
