Is your organization interested in participating in our
Sustainability Internship Program for the Fall 2015 semester?

Have a creative idea for making our world a better place
and need some help making it happen?

The Sustainability Internship Program matches organizations, government
agencies and businesses with ambitious college students who can tackle
projects in Tompkins County over the course of one or two semesters.

Since its inception, the Sustainability Internship Program has successfully
matched over 65 students from Cornell, Ithaca College, and Tompkins Cortland
Community College and placed them in over 32 sites across Tompkins County.
Students have tackled projects addressing: composting, energy planning, wood
smoke assessment, waste reduction, greening operations, and wetlands
development, among others. Internships typically require 8-10 hours or less
per week and follow the collegiate calendar.

Projects must address one of the following sustainability themes:
 Transportation Alternatives
 Waste Diversion and Reduction
 Social Justice
 Energy / Greenhouse Gas Emissions
 Community Health
 Smart Development / Green Building
 Natural Resource Conservation
 Sustainable Agriculture/Local Food

If you have a project that fits one of the themes above, take a look at the
 HOST SUPERVISOR responsibilities:
 1) Participate in one Introductory Meeting / Orientation at the beginning of
 the semester
 2) Complete one pre- and one post-internship survey
 3) Provide guidance and instruction to intern(s) throughout placement so it
is meaningful for both host organization and student
 4) Attend the final presentation at the Sustainability Center at the end of
the fall or spring semester, created and implemented by student interns, to
 spotlight achievements resulting from internship

If those responsibilities seem manageable to you, complete an INTERNSHIP
DESCRIPTION at: http://www.sustainabilityctr.org/SIP.pdf and submit it to
spen...@sustainabilityctr.org. The Fall 2015 Internship Description template
is attached to this email for your convenience. For this semester, we will
be accepting only email applications. If you need to submit a paper
application, please contact us to make special arrangements.

Feel free to call Spencer Woodcock, Sustainability Center Director, at
(607)-227-7329 or email her at spen...@sustainabilityctr.org should you have
 questions or concerns.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Upon receiving your application, tSC staff will
contact you if we have questions or information is missing from your
description. Your placement will then be posted on our website for students
to consider. Center staff will promote your internship(s) across various
student and community networks, and will contact you directly when students
have applied (and have indicated compatible skills and experience). From
there, Host Supervisors conduct interviews with internship candidates and
 decide who to offer placements.

Sustainable Communities and Resilience to Weather Disasters

Monday, February 23, 2015

7:00 - 8:30 PM

Geneva Room at the Warren Hunting Smith Library

Hobart and William Smith Colleges

334 Pultney Street, Geneva, NY 14456

Rain, snow, temperatures, and general weather patterns hitting Upstate New York
each season are becoming both more severe and variable as our overall climate
changes.

Community leaders are now realizing that they need to increase their capacity
to remain economically sustainable with an intact natural environment to
support commerce, tourism, and community prosperity before future weather
disasters strike.

The Finger Lakes Institute is hosting two speakers familiar with the realities
of facing weather disasters and fostering community recovery.

Eric Ameigh, Project Coordinator for the City of Boulder, Colorado will share
insights about torrential flooding in their small, tourism-based college city,
following historic rain storms in the Rocky Mountains in September 2013. Eric
is the former Director of Neighborhood Initiatives for the City of Geneva, NY.

Steve Griffin, CEO of the Finger Lakes Economic Development Center in Penn Yan,
NY will present the issues they faced in the wake of the May 2014 major village
flooding and steps to help with the rebuilding and recovery.

Both speakers will convey the lessons their communities learned and tips for
Finger Lakes communities to be better prepared to face forthcoming weather
catastrophes.

This speaking event is free and open to the public. Community members are
encouraged to carpool if necessary, and park in the Medbury Lot at the main
entrance to Hobart and William Smith Colleges. The Library is a very short
walk to the south, across Pulteney Street from the new building construction
site.

You are invited to attend a conference at New York University, designed to
provide advocates and attorneys working on natural gas and oil issues with
the skills to understand and engage in the financial aspects of current
debates on fossil fuels. Continuing Legal Education credit will be
 available for attorneys.

As you are well aware, this is a time of rapidly expanding natural gas and
oil infrastructure. This conference is designed to help advocates become
conversant in the financial aspects of these debates and to learn about
ways to use this information in their communities.

The Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) and the
Institute for Policy Integrity at NYU have been holding an annual Coal
Finance training for several years, but this is the first year we will
devote a portion of our conference to training for advocates working on
unconventional oil and natural gas issues. The conference is aimed at
participants who are knowledgeable about unconventional oil and natural gas
issues but may have little to no background in finance and want to learn
 more about industry dynamics.

Hi All
A quick reminder that there is a Public Hearing on the Tompkins County
Comprehensive
Plan
http://www.tompkinscountyny.gov/files/compplan/documents/801%20Main%20Low%20Resolution.pdf
TONIGHT 5:30pm in the County's Legislative Chambers. (121 E Court St)
PLEASE come speak out in support of Living Wage, Energy Efficiency, and
Sustainable Development.
Wouldn't hurt to remind them of the 2020 Energy Strategy that they approved
in 2010 to reduce our County's greenhouse gas footprint 20% by 2020, and
80% by 2050.
There has been significant pushback against Living Wage and Sustainable
Development - so your attendance and speaking out will make an important
difference.
