[sustainable_tompkins-l] Scott Pruitt approves dangerous pesticide

2017-04-19 Thread Tony Del Plato
Environmental Protection Agency administrator Scott Pruitt just overruled
the recommendation of EPA scientists, rejecting a petition to ban the
dangerous pesticide chlorpyrifos.1

EPA studies show that this pesticide affects fetal brain growth during
pregnancy and causes neurological disorders. But instead of listening to
his own agency's research, Pruitt sided with Dow Chemical and a way of
thinking that puts business as usual ahead of protecting our health.2

This is exactly the kind of thing we were afraid of when President Trump
selected Scott Pruitt to run the EPA -- an agency that Pruitt sued 14 times
as Oklahoma's attorney general.3 Now it's up to us to raise awareness and
take action.

* Will you chip in to help us demand a reversal of this anti-science
decision?
*

Chlorpyrifos is so toxic that it has been banned from use in household
products since 2000. In the last decade, several large-scale studies have
found that children with the chemical in their bloodstream had lower IQ
scores than children who didn't, and that farmers who used
chlorpyrifos-based pesticides suffered from memory loss and other
neurological disorders.4 To combat the effects, farmers now wear protective
clothing when using chlorpyrifos.5

* Think about that. The chemical is so dangerous that farmers have to wear
protective clothing, but they're spraying it on our fruit trees and
vegetable plants.*

In 2007, a coalition of environmental groups filed a petition to ban the
use of chlorpyrifos.6 The law was on their side: Legally, the EPA is
required to ban use of a chemical if it cannot be proven safe.7

*But now Scott Pruitt shut down any further review of chlorpyrifos until
2022, putting people at risk for years to come.*8

We're committed to continuing our work to protect bees, achieve 100%
renewable energy, and more. But we need your help to hold Scott Pruitt
accountable and make sure the EPA can continue its work protecting us and
our environment.

*Will you chip in to help protect our health and environment?
*

Thanks for making it all possible.

Yours,

Heather Leibowitz

[sustainable_tompkins-l] 4/26: "Indigenous Cropping Systems" with Jane Mt. Pleasant @ CCE-Tompkins

2017-04-19 Thread Sandra J. Repp

Indigenous American Cropping Systems
Wednesday, April 26, 6:30-8:30pm
@ CCE-Tompkins, 615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca

The Three Sisters - winter squash, maize and climbing beans - are the main
agricultural crops of various Native American groups, particularly the
Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) of the Finger Lakes region. Indigenous farmers in the
northeast have been growing these crops for hundreds of years, and continue to
do so today. Jane Mt. Pleasant (Tuscarora), Associate Professor in Horticulture
and affiliated with the American Indian and Indigenous Studies program at
Cornell University, will give a presentation about Haudenosaunee agriculture,
knowledge and the productivity of indigenous cropping systems.

[sustainable_tompkins-l] Greenstar Enviro Movie Night!! Apr 30@ The Space

*Five Year Anniversary Screening and Panel Discussion featuring*

*“Empowered: Power from the People” and “Frac Attack: Dawn of the
Watershed”*

ITHACA, N.Y. – On Sunday, April 30th, 2017 at 6:30pm, The Space @

Greenstar will host back-to-back screenings of the environmental zombie
short Frac Attack:

Dawn of the Watershed (18 min) and the feature documentary Empowered: Power
from the

People (1 hr 16 min), which highlights the many ways that Tompkins County
residents have

embraced renewable energy from wind and solar, to geothermal and biodiesel.
The event is

sponsored by Greenstar Cooperative Market and takes place in partnership
with Earth Day

Ithaca and Cornell Cooperative Extension's Go Solar Tompkins program.

The films will be followed by a panel discussion on the topic of
sustainability and how it

intersects with movements for social change like Black Lives Matter and the
fight against the

Dakota Access and Keystone pipelines. Moderated by Shira Evergreen,
Director of both films,

panelists include Don Barber, former Town Supervisor of the Town of
Caroline; Lexie Hain of

Black Oak Wind Farm; Fabina Colon of the Multicultural Resource Center;
Annie Koreman,

candidate for Tompkins County Legislature District 5; Lily Gershon of the
Dacha Project; and

McKenzie Jones.

Frac Attack is a co-production of Shirari Industries and The Dacha Project,
in association with

the Shaleshock Citizens Action Alliance. The campy zombie thriller was made
by over seventy

community members and helped galvanize local activism against the
exploitative drilling of the

Marcellus Shale by multinational corporations. Empowered: Power from the
People is a

co-production of Shirari Industries and Earthwalk Farm and was screened at
numerous

community venues and six environmental film festivals, from Olympia,
Washington to Freiburg,

Germany. Renowned environmentalist Bill McKibben said, “Empowered is a
remarkable

ground-up account of the revolution that’s really starting to alter things
on this earth – and with

any luck this movie will help many more people shake up their communities!”

Shira Evergreen, Director of both films noted “In all movements for social
and environmental

justice, it takes a combination of strategies to create positive change.
The arts, and films

specifically, are powerful tools to reach people at an emotional level, and
it’s our hope that Frac

Attack and Empowered continue to inspire people who might not have
otherwise gotten involved

to start asking questions and taking action.”

This event will provide the community an opportunity to review how far
we've come in the

transition to a renewable energy future and to look ahead to further
collaborative efforts on a

spectrum of fundamental social issues.

The event goes from 6:30-9:30pm. Tickets will be $10 suggested donation and
free for kids.

Refreshments will be available.
