Science and Power in the 21st Century: In this talk I will be addressing the role of genetics in science and society. I will propose that prominent biological notions such as the idea of DNA as a "master molecule", the "genetic code”, and the idea of a "genetic programme” that guides organism development, along with other basic elements of modern biology, are not evidence-based explanations of the natural world but rather are ideological constructs. These intrusions of ideology into science exist because twisting biology—and thus our understanding of life itself—into a genecentric conformation is necessary to support ancient social norms of nationalism, patriarchy, racism, inheritance of wealth, and hierarchy. Necessary, since these social norms all share as their key assumption the primacy of heritage. This is an important thesis. I will show in the talk that it is powerfully supported by modern biological research and by abundant historical evidence. (Thu Mar 22 2018 7:00PM - 9:00PM RCK102).
