What could actually more damaging that firing Mueller is to fire Rosenstein and put in his place someone who will answer to Trump (can be done without senate approval for this position). The new person could refuse to issue subpoenas and make other refusals as well as gut the budget. It would leave Mueller in place but unable to do much. This could actually be a more serious problem.
