Michael,
I have a 88 in series II, 1961 It has a 2.25litre Diesel. They were a
standart fit and used the same block as the 2.25 petrol. It is good for
about 60 bhp but I wouldn't recommend it in a 109 if you want to get
anytwhere even moderately fast. Will plod on forever though. expect 23 mpg

There was recently one for sale in Vancouver that had a Land Cruiser
driveline installed in it, so it can be done.
Also, there were diesel versions, and some are around still, in BC.
Also there is a guy in Sicamous area wrecking old Series Land Rovers,
pretty good stock on hand I think,
