[biofuels-biz] Recombining fatty acid and glycerine

2002-10-26 Thread Marc de Piolenc

What I think is neither here nor there. The place to find actual results
from attempts to reconstitute glycerides is the German Ersatz
literature from the two World Wars. Germany experienced a severe
shortage of fats and oils in both wars, and so experimented on processes
to synthesize glycerides from residues of other processes.

My IMPRESSION (I have NOT read the literature) is that these attempts
were not very successful. Do not, however, take that as the last word on
the subject!

Start looking in the US Government research reports bibliographies from
just after WWII - '46, 47 - when they were cataloguing the technical
literature taken from the defeated Axis countries. That material is now
in the possession of the Library of Congress and is available through
their Photoduplication Service.

Is there any way to recombine the glycerine and free fatty acid? If
this is possible we can use the glycerine from previous BD production
and use this to neutralize high FFA SVO.

This reduction was confirmed by the belgian tax authorities. But nothing is
certain until it is firmly decided.
It was already reported from 2003 to 2004.

Are you sure about that tax reduction in 2004? That would be good news for
 us living in the Benelux.

  Triafro,

Biodiesel exist already in the new countries. Czeck reppublic
 has a plant,
Poland has a plant and there are plans for 2 new plants, one by
 BDI Austia
  and one by SPT US.
Mainly rapeseed oil is used for the production in Poland.

I live in Belgium and perhaps the regulations are the same as in the UK.
Taxes on biodiesel are the same as on mineral diesel. But in 2004 there
 will
be a reduction of 100 % for these taxes in the EU. Taxes are to be payed
 as
  soon as biodiesel is commercialised.
There is also VAT to pay on biodiesel.

Does anyone know if the economic agreements being brokered with the
10 new countries to join the EU (Cyprus, Czeck Rep, Estonia, Hungary,
Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia) or the future
candidates (Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey) have touched upon economic
policy towards bio-fuels? Aren't the EU hoping to increase bi-diesel
production to 11% by 2010 or something did I read? Therefore, are
they going to apply pressure to these former Eastern Block countries
to fall in line with mainland Europe in terms of their incentives
   towards bio-diesel i.e. taxation levels.

Also, I am slightly confused. If one were to make bio-diesel in the
UK, what rate of tax would I need to pay per litre to use it legally,
when/how would I pay it? Do I put it in my tax return form?

   Thanks

As I understood it this should become law in 2004 and allow countries to
give tax reductions or exemptions as they see fit, then again I'm not at all
clued up with the details of EU law, so maybe I misunderstand.

There is a bit more on this at the Danish Folkcenter website:-

[biofuels-biz] Report: Vegetable Oil as a Fuel

2002-10-26 Thread Darren

I have been working on this report on and off for some time now. I have
decided to put it online at http://www.vegburner.co.uk/report.html

My hope, in doing so, is that this will be regularly updated document
giving a good balanced overview of the technologies, providing a resource
for development, lobbying etc.

There is lot of information on the net but it's everywhere and finding
what
you require is often easier said than done.

I feel that I have the basics covered but would welcome further
contributions. I have mainly been researching SVO so other parts are a bit
lacking, also some material could doubtlessly use rewriting, more supporting
references and figures. All contributors will be credited. Any comments
gratefully received.

I'm considering having a forum attached where text and updates can be
discussed.

I may at some time in the future try and get the content published if it
appears appropriate but material is free for non commercial use with the
normal conditions.

[biofuel] We need alternative energy now

2002-10-26 Thread brad bartholomew

Hi,

I am actually a population activist, but I thought
that you may be interested that the push for
alternative fuels may come sooner than you think.

The new terrorism is essentially a dispute over oil
(refer bin Laden's stated reasons for 9/11 - refer
Bush's zeal to get at the Iraqi oil reserves).

The solution: The world has to move on from oil.

Leave the oil in the ground and pursue alternative
forms of energy now.

As long as the U.S. oil companies are seen as the
rapacious exploiters of the Arab oil reserves the new
terrorism is here to stay.

Yours truly,
Brad Bartholomew

They aren't seen as exploiters of oil, American society is. Oil will
stop being used when it's all used up or technology forces it's
discontinuation, or it gets so expensive to find it that it is no
longer worth it. We will still be around by that time? Only
time will tell

One that my dad was told ( by his mechanic ) to thin down dino diesel in
winter by putting 1/2 gal. of gasoline into the tank before filling normally
with diesel, this might work with Bio Diesel. Another I've heard of , but,
I don't know how effective is to use some toluene.

Apparently there was a report on the BBC on 10/20 about the use of
White Spirits (Mineral Spirits?... paint thinner?) as a blending
agent for thinning down the WVO/SVO for use as is in Diesel engines
(Indirect inject) Reccomendation was as little as 3%. Anyone have
anymore info on this other other potential thinning agents that is
cost effective. Would this type agent increase or imporves the
 cetane potential?

 Thanx.

Dont forget also that Smoking is linked to just about every cancer out
there.. Not just lung cancer. In school one instructor told us that the

vein it would kill you. anyone care to try it? The human body is an amazing
thing to keep running for as long as it does considering the abuse we put on

Gee,ya think... apparently you are not told enough to have developed that
cynical there are no simple solutions, and even if there were people
 wouldn't change philosophy.

My appalling current favorite is smoking. People have known that smoking
causes and contributes to cancer for about 40 years or more. Yet today,
in
the USA, a developed country with reasonable school attendance and media
exposure, more kids are starting to smoke than even 20 years ago- NOT
LESS!
These kids have all known people with cancer some rather intimately, yet
 still they puff away.

If you ask why, it always comes down to because it is cool- or bad One
boy, 20, never smoked (cigarettes) before, started after he was released
from jail since he couldn't do drugs on probation, to be able to hang
with
his old friends- other wise they have nothing to do together.
