[Biofuel] Avocado oil?

2005-08-25 Thread Sir Woody Hackswell
I see that avocado trees are one of the most productive per ha... but
which part is used to calculate the oil yield? The pit/stone or the
part you eat? Or both?

I don't see a reason the avocado can't still be used for pet food (or
healthy guacamole) once the oil has been pressed out.

[biofuel] Avocado oil - was Re: California fruit fly area.... waste could be used as biofuel?

2003-03-15 Thread Keith Addison

Hi MM, Steve...

Since this is all taking place in Southern California, right now, and
since Avocado was identified in the article as being one of the types
of produce that didn't fair well in the newer irradiating measures (it
changed the taste and such, to the point where it could not be sold)
then perhaps some action could be taken to alert the growers to this
other outlet for their produce. I think also the irradiating company
and state officials could be interested. I mean, if there is one type
of produce that their actions don't work on, and if they could
complement their assistance to the growers by referring them to
biodiesel producers, then this would be win-win-win- etc. The
growers (including some organic folks) were pretty desperate when they
were covered a few weeks or months ago, so I'm sure anything that
could help them get some revenue, even if just a little, the effort
might be appreciated. And I hear occassional annecdotal reports of
southern califronia efforts toward bio-diesel, so maybe someone
reading this list would like to do some experiments with this produce?
Even if there isn't enough time to make it work out ideally this time,
it might be worthwhile to research now (just as they are doing with
the irradiation) in preparation for possible future allocations of
waste produce.

MM

After you've pressed the oil out, what to do with the rest? Not
seed-cake, I guess, more like mash of some sort. Should make good
stockfeed anyway I think. I pressing it, won't a lot of water also
come out with the oil? Or is it dried first somehow? Maybe the
traditional methods of pressing oil from coconuts (by fermenting it
first) might have some application. Something in the Biofuel list
archives about that.

Best

Keith
