RE: [biofuel] Mid sized Diesel pickups?

2002-11-12 Thread dennis pantazis

there are a few trucks to be had, but VERY rare these days. i have been
looking for about 6 months and have only seen 2 available, way far away from
me.

Mid Size Trucks- are you thinking Dakota or Tacoma. I don;t believe that
there were any diesels.

Compact: 30 mpg+
Mitsibishi MightyMax
Dodge Ram 50/Power Ram 50 (mitsu engine)
Mazda B2200/B2600
Ford Ranger w/Mazda Engine
Isuzu P'up
Toyota
Chevy S-10 w/ Isuzu motor
Nissan
Don't discount 81-84 VW Rabbit Trucks.

Full Size: These are going to be Heavy Duty workhorses. Expect to pay top
dollar for these. Compared to your old truck, it will be a beast. Much
rougher ride, more expensive to maintain. Each has its own issues.
1992 Dodge 2WD Cummins, $8k-10K
1992 Ford 2WD, 7.3 $7k-10K
I would stay away from Chevy/GM diesels of this vintage.

you can try scouring places like www.abracat.com, www.bargainnews.com,
www.autotrader.com

www.carsforsale.com, www.trader.ca has more diesels than us.

good luck.

[biofuel] Mid sized Diesel pickups?

2002-11-11 Thread Martha Olson

Well, my little ole Mazda pickup came to an untimely end last week
(unfortunately with me in it) and I'm contemplating buying a diesel truck
so I'd have the option of going with biofuel.

I'd be looking for a 10 yr old ( + or - ) truck. What models are readily
available in the US? What kind of MPG should I expect? Comments on
reliability would be appreciated.

Is there a point in the last 10 years when diesel engines got noticeably
cleaner? I think I'd favor the dual tank system and expect I'd be burning
petrol diesel at least part of the time.

Thanks in advance for any help.

New ones - won't take you long! With details, but no mpg.

Diesels in the US

Older ones too, but still no mpg.

What kind of MPG should I expect? Comments on

Diesel engines today are 500% cleaner than they were just 20 years
ago.-- Chrysler

Pollution from diesel cars has been cut by 80 to 90% over the past
two decades.-- Union of Concerned Scientists

Particulate emissions from diesel-fuelled engines have been reduced
by 90% over the past decade. -- Engine Manufacturers Association

Direct injection diesel four-stroke engines add up to 12 miles per
gallon (5 km/litre) -- or 24% increased efficiency -- over gasoline
engines in a large car. -- Chrysler

Compared to a gasoline engine, a direct injected diesel engine
reduces carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 56%. -- Chrysler

Today's best diesel passenger vehicles are more efficient than their
gasoline counterparts, reducing carbon emissions by roughly 30%. --
Union of Concerned Scientists

The most significant challenge is nitrogen oxides and particulate
emissions. Future diesel engines will have to be four to eight times
cleaner than they are today. -- Chrysler

Pollution from diesel cars must be reduced another 75 to 90% within
the next few years. -- Union of Concerned Scientists

Current (PNGV) design criteria call for an 80% reduction in nitrogen
oxide emissions compared to current diesels, and a 50% reduction in
particulate emissions. This is well beyond current regulatory
requirements. -- former US Vice President Al Gore

Compression-ignition (diesel) direct-injection engines potentially
meet regulatory requirements for emissions while maintaining their
traditional advantages of reliability, high efficiency, durability,
and competitive cost. -- US Partnership for a New Generation of
Vehicles (PNGV)

Best

2002-11-11 Thread studio53

Well,
The pickin's are slim. I have an 86 Isuzu Trooper Turbo Diesel and it took
quite a while to find it. Ebay, $1500, and it needed a fair amount of work.
I do have the twin tank system installed and it works wonderfully. The US
made choices; Dodge and Ford seem to have a lot of mechanical problems with
the injector pump so you are going to have a lot of homework in front of
you.

2002-11-11 Thread James Slayden

I was just talking about this with a member of the Biodiesel class over
the weekend and he was thinking of an Isuzu Pup, both for the pratical
reasons of having a truck, and the milage benefit of having a small
engine. Dunno, it depends on what features your looking for.
