[SWCollect] Time for my introduction

2002-11-10 Thread Stefan Lindblom

Greetings everyone,

After lurking in this little list for 2 months now I felt now it's the time
come out of the closet ;)

As you can see, my name is Stefan Lindblom. I am from Sweden, 25 years old,
and as my friend Pedro here pointed out, don't look nerdish enough to be allowed
to collect old games :)

Anyway, when I was 12 I bought my first SSI ADD game, Secret of the
Silver Blades. That become the first game to mean something for me, there was
magic surrounding it. 2 years later I bought War of the Lance, both for the
C-64. I sold them along with my computer to some guy from St. Petersburg who
wanted it for his son. I got a Russian annual wage for it, almost feel bad about
it. The story behind him was that Russian ships used to come to my hometown to
deliver lumber/timber for our huge sawmill.
Off topic after 5 min.. great..
War of the Lance was my way into the Dragonlance world. I am now a proud
owner of every novel and every add on(atlas, bestiary and so on) that I am aware
of. Something 15 year-old may have eluded me but I sure you will be happy to
tell me.

Btw, do guys mind me using smilies? I tend to be full of irony and sarcasm
and dont want to be misinterpreted. I mean you guys being adult(except Pedro)
and everything, you might take offence from a brat like me :)
Jumping a few years here, to the summer of -99. I found a place called Ebay,
I am sure it is familiar ;)
I started searching some at random, probably began with War of the Lance and
Amberstar. And after a while I realized that hey, this was cool, I also had
about $1 in my bankaccount. So..
Half a year later and $6000 poorer(maybe $2000 for shipping only since I live
in Sweden, sucks), I was the owner of 151 SSI games, mostly the smaller boxes
like the Goldbox games. 350 games in total I believe, the rest was mostly games
I had fond memories of like the Ultima games, Legend of Faerghail, Defender of
the Crown, Dark Heart of Uukrul and so on. Since I moved down to Stockholm, all
these games have been stored at my parents place, the attic. Every time I go
there I go up there and unpack them just to look at them, I really miss them. I
brought my favorite games down here, just to sit in the bookshelf brightening my
day.
I have thought about selling many of my games, but I dont know how. Since
most people are in the US, I doubt they would want to pay the shipping, about
$10 per game. And since I wouldn't sell any $100 games.. well. I have sold a few
to a guy from Finland but that was all.
During my ebay days, haven't really been there since, I came into contact
with you some of you guys. Tom Mage was the first, and the best "contact" I had
abroad, he helped me get my hands on the U9 Dragon Ed since it wasn't released
in Sweden, I also bought a bunch of nice games from him. Even think I got my
shrinkwrapped copy of War of the Lance from him, hardly have to mention that is
one of my favorites :)
I remember asking Tom if he knew my age.. he guessed right, I was perplexed,
but then he said I was probably young since young hearts are more fragile. I was
depressed cause my relationship was over at the time.. and damn, he was
right.
Then there was Edward Franks, hi Edward. I bought a big box of old SSI Apple
II games from him, the big box format.
I remember more of you guys but I don't think I ever traded with you, only
mailed with you a bit or so.
And the finally we have Pedro with that weird surname. I met him playing
Diablo2 this summer and he directed me here. Such a great guy, always makes me
laugh. Btw, did you guys know he is noble?
I used to have a homepage before, http://www.stefan.lindblom.com, but is
no longer up. I had no time to entertain it and update it, and didnt want to pay
for the domain. My old page is still up though but I have done anything with it
in 2 years time. If you do happen to have some time over, have a
look.
http://w1.650.telia.com/~u65005013/
Ok, now you know who I am. I like the environment here, that you guys seem to
know each other so well and stick together, I hope I will become part of it
:)
Best regards,
Stefan

2002-11-10 Thread Alexander Zöller
Hi Stefan,

welcome to the list! Thanks for introducing yourself, always great to learn
how other collectors got drawn into the hobby. Your story of investing a
small fortune to build your initial collection sounds all too familiar,
I've only recently come to balance out my spendings through trades and
sales. I started with virtually no collectible games ('cept for the few
which I had previously purchased in stores) in 1999, and the next years saw
me buying heavily on eBay. Ebay,... the sudden shock upon realising there's
a huge supply of vintage software out there, and that it wasn't hiding from
you like all those tiny internet sites with lists of old software, but a
giant market with literally thousands of interesting pieces... :)

I know have about 400 Origin titles, mostly Ultimas, which are my specialty
and my most priced collectibles.

The monetary aspect is something I mentioned on this list before -- it's
still possible to get started as a vintage software collector these days,
but only if you have some real funds on your hands. This is likely to
become more and more difficult, right up to the point where newbies may
find it impossible to break into this hobby because they cannot afford the
initial investment.

There aren't too many people that exclusively collect SSI games, it's a
rich field but somewhat underrated due to the extremely high production
figures of certain titles. The market values seem to fluctuate wildly and
I'm sure you're more knowledgeable on the subject than most of us.
Personally I only pick them up as trade bait (term (c) Tom Mage).

Oh and lastly, there really is no need to worry about your age, I think I'm
still the youngest here at age 23 (unless there's another lurker who hasn't
come forward yet) :-)

/Alexander

One of these is a copy of Star Saga: One for the Apple II. All the
materials inside are unused and the manuals are shrinkwrapped. I
don't recall hearing about it until I found it, but I thought it was
cool finding it in that condition. I have no sentimental attachment
to it, however, and have decided to see what it will fetch on eBay.

They generally seem to snag about $50 - $60, from what I've seen.

Hi Lee,

A bunch indeed.. imagine all those books along with all the games and it
would be a marvelously looking bookshelf. But hey, all game collectors
already know that :)

And yes, I have that Trail Map, still in shrink though so I dont know what
it looks like.. have to get another one perhaps.. someday.

The sequel to Heroes of the Lance was called Dragons of Flame, same kind of
engine(or lack of one). Both sucked, I agree, dont blame you for selling
them. I of course have quite a few copies of them but I never said I was
sane either ;)

Goodness, that a bunch of stuff. I started reading the DragonLance
novels when they first came out. (I was 15 or so.) Kept up with the
books through the first three trilogies or so, then they started
coming out too fast for me to keep up. The quality also started
varying as different authors came in.

Do you have the DL Trail Map? I had one, but sold it on eBay a while
back, I'm afraid. I think that was one of the few game products I had.
I pretty much only read the books.

But I've gotten off topic. How's this? Some of the very first PC
games I bought were two DragonLance games. Heroes of the Lance was
one and I forget what the other one was. (Was there a sequel that's
not listed at MobyGames yet?) Anyway, IIRC they were cheap. I didn't
even have a PC yet, but played them somewhere that did. After being
used to the Apple II's 8-color hi-res graphics, 4-color CGA did
nothing for me. I eventually sold both games in disgust.

I also collect AH games. My list is here:
http://www.classicgaming.com/gotcha/avalonhill.htm (no history section for
AH yet...need to get to that). For some reason AH games are not very
desirable on ebay (with only a few exceptions like Telengard). AH was one
of the most prolific publishers of the early 80's, but I guess their
products overlapped and were just overshadowed by SSI.

Lee just pointed out an AH game I have to put on my want list...Incunabula.
Anybody have one for trade or sale?

Epyx is another company I heavily collect
(http://www.classicgaming.com/gotcha/epyx.htm). Again, I feel one of the
most successful (yet underappreciated) publishers of the 80s.

I also had about $1 in my bankaccount. So..
Half a year later and $6000 poorer(maybe $2000 for shipping only since
I live in Sweden, sucks), I was the owner of 151 SSI games, mostly the
smaller boxes like the Goldbox games. 350 games in total I believe, the
rest was mostly games I had fond memories of like the Ultima games, Legend
of Faerghail, Defender of the Crown, Dark Heart of Uukrul and so on. Since
I moved down to Stockholm, all these games have been stored at my parents
place, the attic. Every time I go there I go up there and unpack them just
to look at them, I really miss them. I brought my favorite games down
here, just to sit in the bookshelf brightening my day.
I have thought about selling many of my games, but I dont know how.
Since most people are in the US, I doubt they would want to pay the
shipping, about $10 per game. And since I wouldn't sell any $100 games..
well. I have sold a few to a guy from Finland but that was all.
During my ebay days, haven't really been there since, I came into
contact with you some of you guys.

Both sets have at least one error-free set of disks (why collect
 if you can't play)?

I've been thinking about this... and wouldn't it be safer to play off backup
copies? I mean, the disk could get munched in the drive, the label could
get scratched going in and out... or is that attitude too anal for the rest
of this group? B-)

Too anal? Certainly not for me, and I doubt for most people
here... I didn't want to blab/stray off-topic or I'd go off for 50
pages. I image all the floppies (either normalize them or make nibble
images) copy them over a string of computers and burn the images on CD
for use on an emulator. The same images can be used to create real
Apple disk images in the future if I want to play them on a real Apple.
I hunt originals because I want to preserve as much of the original (no
crack screens, etc.) as possible.
Mega off-topic: There are emulators for PDA's... so where are
the joysticks? Who wants to abuse the integrated buttons for those
things, anyway? :) I guess its called the external keyboard. Sigh.

Back on topic: Add Rescue Raiders to the list of gems. I
never thought I'd get that, let alone a Demo copy (used the cheat
keys/level skip keys... all the levels are intact. Demo copies of some
titles are incomplete, some are full copies w/a DEMO sticker on them.
This seems to be the latter.) Had the original receipt and some
Sir-Tech dealer promo letter in there too. Cool.

RE: [SWCollect] [ SWCollect ] What's your favorite find?

2002-11-10 Thread Hugh Falk
Copies are the way to go for playing, and I usually let other people do the
copying. Finding good original games at a garage sale, thrift store, flea
market, etc. is a rarity for me (especially since I don't go often anymore).
However, I've found hundreds of copies or loose originals at these places.
People often sell disk cases full of them for a few bucks. They don't have
much value to the collector but are great for playing.

Now here's a question. If you own the 20-year-old original, is buying
20-year-old copies (likely pirated 20 years ago) still pirating? :-)

RE: [SWCollect] [ SWCollect ] What's your favorite find?

2002-11-10 Thread Hugh Falk
Thanks for the minor deity status! I'd actually like to see what the
complete EA Apple II catalog looks like. Do you have a list you could send
me? Also, does that include IIgs?

That reminds me of another good poll for you guys. I mentioned some of the
best games I got for free. But I'd be curious...what is the most you paid
for a single game? I don't want to know about a group of games...just one
game.

For me it was Caverns of Callisto (NM), which I paid $111.38 on ebay.
Considering I was looking for at least a couple of years, and this was the
first one I saw, I'm surprised it didn't go for more. (April of this year).
It's possible I've paid more for a single game in the past, but I don't
think so (I might be repressing a horrible memory).

I spent about 22+ months tracking down every last EA title
(complete) made for the Apple ][ (flat, box, game, utility, app, etc.)
Of those by far the most satisfying to find: Marble Madness, Realm of
Impossibility, One-on-One, Arctic Fox, Adventure Construction Set. Hugh
is a tiny god for providing the EA Flatpack reference online :)

I have all the Apple ][ Origin titles complete (except Caverns
of Callisto, which I missed for $5 on a newsgroup last year). These
two sets are by far my most valued, though there are buckets more that I
prize as well (mostly RPG's).

Both sets have at least one error-free set of disks (why collect
if you can't play)?

The EA game I have are the common Bards Tale and Wasteland ones.

Color me a classic RPGer. :)

To expand on your point about not particularly rare or expensive

games, I collect the old Avalon Hill computer games. They had some
nifty hybrids (computer game with mounted map board and counters) and a
messy listing of games. Trying to figure out what games are out there
and then finding them is the fun for me.

Regarding Odyssey: The Compleat Adventure:
I remember this one, this was a GREAT game! It's in four
parts, right? First you fight monsters, trade, and acquire
enough money to build a ship and leave the island, then you
have to navigate the ocean, find a magic artifact in some
catacombs (my memory here's a bit fuzzy) and then use it to
storm the bad guy's fortress. My cousin and I used to play
it on his IIe. The only thing was, he'd gotten a pirate copy
so a lot of the text had been hacked to display dirty words.

IIRC, there was also a sequel, Apventure to Atlantis I think.

Yes, I have several mint copies of Odyssey. I also have some mint
Apventures as well, all straight from Bob Clardy himself! :)
