Re: [SWCollect] Obsessions....

2002-12-30 Thread Stephen Emond

Hi everyone, some of you may know me already... for
those who don't I'm a huge game fan who's #1 gaming obsession is Ultima :)
I've been a member of the group for a little while now but haven't posted yet
since I didn't have too much useful insight to add to previous threads.

That being said, there were actually 10 Runes of
Virtues for Ultima VI... besides the eight virtues there were also Infinity
Singularity. As to their fates, I'd love to know as well... If I recall
correctly the lucky winners didn't actually have to send them back to Origin,
merely submit a photo of themselves with the rune. So some may still be out
there... Drawings of them can be found in the "Star in Ultima VII" contest
insert with some copies of U6.

As for the top of my most wanted listed... that'd
have tobe an original Akalabeth for the same reason as you Pedro, it is
the origin of an amazing legacy... Although not quiteRG's first game. For
that reason I'd also have to add "Number 1" to my list, but hey any of RG's 28
pre-Akalabeth Teletype games would be cool ;)

I live on Long Island actually (New York). I'd REALLY like to go, as I'm
very curious to see the faces behind the e-mails (except, of course, for
Jim now that he sufficiently scared me by his totally unwarranted
appearance on the MindCandy DVD) but I doubt I could make it. I have a
new baby, and it's not easy to get a babysitter for an overnight.

This get-together idea is a good thing to nurture. I visit the Wacky
Packages (another of my hobbies -- remember the 70s phenomenon of Wacky

they have get togethers constantly. It adds a new level of friendship
and allows for a greater scope in the topics of the forum (because they
know each other) and it's fun to read the back-and-forth exchanges.

to:- Professionally dump the video in 4:2:2 for proper mastering to

CDROM videos that may fall into this scope, like theKen Roberta

I also have another Origin promotional tape, that was distributed to
software stores circa 1989. They are cheaply made advertisements for old
Origin games like Windwalker, Knights of Legend, 2400 AD, and another (no
Ultima tho.) They were obviously made 'in-house', and they are not the
best-produced commercials that I've ever seen, but they are an interesting
look at the birth of computer game advertising. Again, if you get the
permissions, I'd be glad to contribute! :)

Who would I talk to about that? EA or someone else? EA hadn't purchased
 Origin by that time.
 --

Unfortunately when EA bought Origin out they also got the rights to all of
their older titles. So one way or another you will likely have to deal with
EA directly for permission...

This whole reshrinking thing is a very nasty
business. I mean, I am not as great as some of you are in spotting differences
in the wrap. Looking to the left of me at my bookshelf however, I do notice
that the wrap on my goldbox games seems to differ from each other. I assume
that is a bad sign. And... the last thing I would do with a game is to unwrap
  it. Maybe stupid but..

I am sorry to hear about your bad experiences
with them Tom, had I known about them before this I dont think I would have
bought anything from them. Oh well, at least I know better now and wont trade

I checked them before today. I assume you got a refund or something and some

Isnt reshrinking and selling things claiming them

They could of course claim they didn't know

SWM have been around for a long
time. They are two people, Tony and Paula. They run a small shop
out in CA and apparently have a warehouse of older software. They also
get some of it fromat least one supplier, though I've never gotten
them to divulge any details.

For awhile the biggest problem with them was
the question of whether their shrinked items were original or rewraps.
One of their suppliers put reshrinks on used games, and SWM at the time
didn't fully understand the collector market. And they were in a
bit of a position, they couldn't just ask their supplier to stop reshrinking
because known originals were more valuable, or they'd get their prices
raised. They weren't alwaysterribly good at identifying
reshrinks and I think disappointed a lot of collectors, though, to be fair,
they did take the reshrinks back and offer refunds. They still use a
system of "rating" the wrap: D=definitely new, P=probably new, something
like that, which I've never understood: If you're not certain, open it and
take the loss if there is one.

I did a column article on them (just explaining
allthis so collectors would know, nothing like my counterfeiter
pieces) which got them a bit upset, but I also gave them advice on how to
spot reshrinks, and I still buy from them today occasionally. I've
always had good service, never rude responses from them. I was kind of
surprised to hear they'd been rude to you.

Well I know of yours (complete), Tom's (missing box reg card), Edward's
(missing reg card), the one from the auction (cassette only), one that was
the source for a cassette image that popped up a few months back, two I
can't really discuss, and another two that are quite possible but
unconfirmed. I'm sure there are more out there somewhere but they certainly
don't turn up very often - it's been a big week :)

Perhaps the guy will sell it privately, though I have my doubts since he

 Hey gang,

I have a small black device here, sort of hexagonal, that has two female
9-pin joystick ports on the back, and four male 9-pins on the front. In
the middle of the male ports are the Electronic Arts name and logo
(cube,
sphere, pyramid). I found it connects to my Commodore 64. Tried Atari
2600
which uses the same kind of connector but the ports on the console are too
far apart. Guessing it's either a joystick coupler (for dual-stick games
like Robotron) or a four-player adapter.

Anybody know if this was sold individually or with a particular game?
Worth
 anything?

I can try making a scan if that will help.

Now we have a whopping two data points ;-) for just the cassette.
$865 and $765. Trying to estimate or guesstimate the price of the
complete game is making my head hurt. I'm still stuck in the mindset
that $250 for a complete game is an insane amount.

So, to revisit a discussion, how do the rest of you try to estimate
the market value of these types of games? What would, say, the first
release of Zork -- the PDP-11 version -- be worth? This is really the
hard part of being a dealer of collectibles. What is your thought
process in determining the market value of a collectible?

RE: [SWCollect] Announcing the CGW Museum

The Ultima RPG pen paper project would
have used simplified versions of the algorithms used for combat and spell
resolution in the Ultima V. It was intended to sell in the same sized box as
the computer series and had a projected price of $30. A lot of work was done on
the project, but mostly organizational rather than developmental. While it was a
project Garriott wanted to do, Origin wasn't willing to schedule it for a
release and it eventually got put aside.

I was very lucky (at least I think I am; never seen this

to pick ADD Treasure of Tarmin (1983)
for the obscure Mattel Aquarius.
Here are scans of it:
http://koti.mbnet.fi/psychic/_eng_games_add.html

Any idea how rare this really is?
Value? (As usual that of course can be anything between zero
and infinite depending on buyer/seller, but asking your opinion.
Plus I'm not selling, just curious.)

This game was originally released for Intellivision as
part two of the ADD-games.
First part was Cloudy
 Mountain (as
advertisements refered to it;
the game itself didn't have an undertitle).
So can aynone confirm was the first part ever released for Aquarius?

And if it wasn't, what were possible reasons?
(Well, Aquarius live a very short life pan but still why did they start with
part 2.)

At least I haven't seen any pictures/screenshots of that.
There was a mentioning in some game list site in addition to Tarmin
but they might have just missed the undertitle, or be otherwise false.

PS. From the pictures I had thought this Tarmin game box
was big (like the usual size), but I suprised how small it was.
For some reason the box style resembles some camera box, at least to me :).

Are you able to scan that one? Front and back.
Yours seems to be rarer; all the Tarmin scans I've seen on net are the one I
have.
Though I suspected there were more versions because the first
ADD had several variations too.

I'd also be interested to see what the back of the French/Canadian
box looks like if you could scan; either style from my page?
Is it a flip lid box or a one-piece box?

It also has a white label on the cart that says
Dungeons Dragons, Treasure of Tarmin

Does it say anywhere where this version was printed?
It's probably newer release; original ADD has that kind of white label too.

My both Tarmin carts are blue Singapore labels.
(The other is identical but has kind of square shaped part
cut from corners but it's still intact; should show pic, hard to explain.
I don't know if this was done by previous owner but it
doesn't look quite professionally cut.)

The original ADD has at least these box variations (probably even more):
- Hong Kong (One-piece Box)
- US (Flip Box)
- French-Canadian (? Box)
- Brazilian (? Box)

The labels, manuals and overlays have even more variations.

Here is a very good page with pics:
http://www.intvfunhouse.com/games/dndc.phtml

The Brazilian box front is particularly interesting,
because it represents night (check background),
where all the other versions are at day.

I think I can answer both questions.

Like you, I didnt know Aquarius Tarmin existed until I saw it at CGExpo
last summer. Conveniently the Blue Sky Rangers were there, so I asked
them about it :) It is not that rare actually, at least not any rarer
than Aquarius in general. Anyways, I have searched eBay for it ever
since (about 10 months maybe?) and I have seen at least half a dozen
complete copies of it (usually with a bunch of other crap though). When
it sells on its own, it went for about $20-30 typically if I recall (Id
pay about $20 max which is why I dont have it yet... must be patient...)

The white label ADD cart, I believe, is released by INTV corp, from the
period around 1984 onwards when Mattel was no longer supporting
Intellivision. Most INTV games had white cartridge labels. Thus it is
just a 'later printing' of the game. Think of it as a Slash re-release
:)

The second Drash ended without meeting
the reserve.

Reserve tends to drive certainprocent of people off
which is quite understandable.
But the price dropped a bit in any case from former loose
cassette auctions once again.
And to regard this one was with manual.
Though it (probably) wasn't sold now.

BTW oddly Drash has SierraVision-logo manual where
the game is SierraVenture-series.
Maybe they couldn't make their mind which series it
belonged to :)
(being mainly arcade but has [thin] RPG-elements).
(Well, they reused the cover art from Ultima I too for
Drash too
and it's obvious and known thattoo much attention
wasn't given for its production in any case.)

Do you know any other games that had this kind of odd
mixture of items (Venture/Vision or similar)?

Sierra threw leftover material and
reprinted what was necessary

while selling their
titlesduring years, i.e. seems if they had

original box and manuals they needed
to reprint only the

floppies/ref. cards etc.

But I'm not referring tothat
with the question.

I loved this one:

Kirk: And you can't pick up an
AK-47 and go killhey, those aliens on the top row, you use them in EGM
for stuff.

EGM: Yeah, we use them to end our articles.
They do kinda look like they're from Space Invaders, don't they?

Tim: They're going to sue you.

Kirk: I'm sure everyone who made
this game is dead by now.

Thats priceless :p

He has a few interesting items. Anyone who
needs a small box (GTI) Ultima WoA2: Martian Dreams just watch his auction
list. Hes posted quite a few of them, all shrinkwrapped. I got one from
him and it was in great shape minus some minor corner damage (a result of the very
cheap cardboard GTI used). Overall good service and great packaging, but way
overpriced for SH.

Ive only ever played the SMS
version... how does it compare to the originals? Parker Bros did do a good job
with the SMS conversion of Kings Quest (except that Graham seemed to
only move one of his legs...).

I have to chime in on this one too.
I've played it for at least 3
different platforms (Apple, Atari and C64 I believe). I love all of
them :) Though I find myself playing the C64 version (emulated) these
days (along with H.E.R.O.). Suddenly I find all the 2600/5200 carts I
loved going through my head (Hall of the Mountain King, Robot Tank,
Enduro, H.E.R.O., Dreadnaught Factor).

I was going to collect Montezuma for awhile. Stopped after 2600 and SMS
versions. I think there is a Colecovision too, and various computer platforms.
Some of the releases have more levels I think. Hey Mountain
King was a cool game too!!

It sells for $10 - $25 now.

The original non-Infocom version of the
game just sold for $250+ on eBay and this seller is a bit confused as to what
he has.
