RE: [SWCollect] [Fwd: ComputerGameCollector.Com]

2002-09-28 Thread Hugh Falk

Hey guys,

I contacted him. Please see the thread below. I'd appreciate your input on
the idea of the one-true master list...the list to rule them all...

Hi Brad,

First, I'd recommend contacting Jim Leonard (founder of MobyGames and
Oldskool PC and the SWCOLLECT e-mail list) about getting on the e-mail list.
We have lots of good discussions about rating games, preserving games,
outrageous auctions, etc. His e-mail is: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I understand your master list concept, which I like. Using a CDF is still
possible though. Any non-matches wouldn't be entered (and an error list
would show you the problems). That's what I meant by a head start.
Importing a list would add a lot of games, but would also leave quite a few
out. Then you could go back and add the rest by hand and clean up the ones
that were added but aren't quite right. It's still easier then entering
them all via a GUI by hand.

I was just thinking, another way to make this process easier is with the
ability to add multiple games at once through the GUI (shift-clicking or
control-clicking) like in file explorer and then clicking an add button.
But that would require a whole new GUI for you.

There is also the point I brought up of adding the ability for your site to
send out a CDF. That way a user can actually own their list in case the
site does goes away some day (or in case they want a list of their own for
some reason). Maybe this could be a feature for Premier members only.

Finally, I think creating a true master list (of viable commercial games) is
a great idea. I'm guessing we could get a good 80% of the way there (or
more) just by combining the databases of the people on our e-mail list. We
could just have everybody spit out what they have in a common format, and
then somebody would have to import and reconcile the lists for duplicates.
I'd be willing to do that (slowly) unless somebody else already has a system
to handle it. I could then share the master list with everybody. I'll
propose it to the group and see what they think.

Hugh

Hi Hugh,

I am not a member of that email group, I didn't even know about it to be
honest.
There is no way for you to send me a comma delimited file; at this time. I
didn't really take under consideration the huge collections that some people
have. The idea of allowing comma delimited files to be imported is
excellent, and very easy to implement, but with it comes some concerns.

I'm not sure if you know or not, but the site works on a Master List, and if
it game isn't on the Master List, it must be added before it can be added to
any personal collection. The collections are not made up of a unique list,
but actually of games from the master list only. It's my way of keeping
things clean so to speak. So you can see where importing CDF's could be a
problem; where games in the CDF are not in the Master List, and where games
may be named slightly different.

However, I'm not sure if there is a standard list of games out there I
could import and use for the master list, but I would be interested in
something like that since it would save the time of building the list and it
would streamline the site with whatever source that is. Then, at that point
I could allow uploading of CDF's that were created with that master list in
mind.

I will assure you though, the site isn't going anywhere.

Brad

This is a very cool site. It is something I had hoped to do eventually, and
I think Jim mentioned it as well in the past.Is the person who runs this
on our list yet? If not, why not? Jim, you should ask him to join.

A problem with the site though is that it is a large investment in time to
put everything I own on-line... with nothing actually permanent for me in
return. (Or is there a way to get a comma delimited file sent to you?)
This means that if the site goes away eventually, your entire collection
information is lost. I keep everything I own in my own database (nicely
backed up) so it's not a big deal for me. Even so, since I have thousands
of games, I wouldn't want to put everything on line only to see the site go
away with nothing to show for it.

It would also be nice, for someone like me (and I'm guessing like most of us
on the list), to upload a comma delimited file (in the format specified by
the site) that can automatically convert your collection...or at least give
you a huge head start.

In case RPGMerchant isn't already in our group, I'm going to forward these
concerns to him via e-mail. But I'm really impressed with his system. I
hope he can keep it going.

Interjection: it seems pretty useless to me to be creating yet another
master list of games when Moby already exists. Wouldn't it make more sense
to have a SOAP service or some other web API that people could use to access
the information from Moby, perhaps for some sort of licensing fee? Since
there's so much in the DB already (complete with screenshots, box shots,
etc.), it seems foolish to me to duplicate the effort.

I believe Moby just expanded to include Amiga coverage, but that still
leaves a huge list of systems out. (I understand Jim, database space. B-)

I'd be glad to contribute to any One List being put together, just let me
know what data you need (title, publisher, release year, etc.) and I'll pull
an extract from my YOIS database. At the moment I'm reluctant to do much
with CGC because it doesn't support bulk uploads. If there were a way to
load my entire collection at once (as well as bulk-suggest additions to the
master list -- I have a lot of obscure stuff), I'd post it in an instant.

Moby only covers IBM/Intel compatible games. There was a whole lot of
gaming that happened before (or never on) Intel machines and compatibles.
If Moby expanded its coverage, I'd agree.

2002-09-27 Thread Alexander Zöller

Been tinkering with the features, added a few games, sent some nifty
suggestions to the webmaster. It all looks very nice and promising, I
especially like that I can properly mobygrade my items :)

What I will never be able to agree to, however, are the availability
ratings. Most of what has been added so far is very common IMHO, or
uncommon at best. It's typically listed as extremely rare though.
Wouldn't be sad if that column were removed completely.

Hello Trixter,

Thanks for making an account at ComputerGameCollector.com

Well after some tweaking, computergamecollector.com is ready to go. I will
continue to better the website with my own ideas as well as suggestions made
by members. I'm never too proud to take advice, ideas and improvements.

If you made an account, but did not start to catalog your collection; please
do so now! There were a couple of bugs, created by other bug fixes, that
prevented users from adding collection games for a few days. That's all
fixed
now!

If you have games that are not listed in the Master List on the website,
simply make a list of them and post them in the Game addtion requests forum;
or if you would like the ability to add games to the Master List yourself,
let
me know. I am looking for some responsible people with a solid knowledge of
classic computer gaming and attention to detail as far as different box
releases go. Anyone selected will receive a free premiere membership.

I am offering advertising, as well as Premiere Memberships. For more
information on what a Premiere Membership how to get one now:
 http://www.computergamecollector.com/games/news/index.php?view=merchant!

For more information on advertising on the website:
 http://www.computergamecollector.com/games/news/index.php?view=advertising

The prices are really low, a premiere membership is as low as 5¢ a day,
while
a whole year of banner advertising is under $50, which is dirt cheap!

Of course, if you do not want a membership, the site is still fully
functional. Although a membership can enhance the experience, by no means
does the absense of one cripple the website. You can still post your
collection, specify wether you are willing to trade or sell certain games,
update whenever you want, search other people's collections and more.
