No, as Infocom wasn't even publishing the grey boxes by that time
(1989).
Even a couple of years prior, their text games had moved to the
slipcased
  style.

However, Mines was previously released by Electronic Arts under the name
  The Mars Saga.

For PC? I think for other platforms, but the only PC release that I know
of
 was the Infocom one.

Possibly it was. I've only seen the EA version for C64.

True, but being a fellow collector I'd tend to trust they're originals

Hey, just because I once sold you that pink frisbee for $500 as alledgedly

You could, but since I know yours is sealed, you'd still have a LGoP1 and

Speaking of Infocom boxes: does anybody know if Mines of Titan was ever

Well, I have Barbarian II in a small quasi-5.25 box (slightly larger).
It has the famous cover pic in front, a brief background story on the
back (in I believe English, German and French), the contents include a
poster of the cover (MAria Whittaker... ah), the game on 5.25
and a small manual. It's for the PC (got it to run once on an old 286,
but even there timing seemed to be off.

I'm guessing the poster must be the hard-to-get item here. I still haven't
found any Barbarian with it anywhere

I'd like t know which versions were released here in the states,
wouldn't mind hunting that one down.

The Death Sword and Axe of Rage boxes are completely different and
completely uninteresting (read, no Maria Whittaker on them ;)

Also, I remember Vixen, was the same, or very similar game engine to

Corinne Russell, other (relatively) famous british page-3 girl.

Re: [SWCollect] hypothetical question

2001-06-21 Thread Pedro Quaresma

Well, this is a long shot, but I got my copy about 2 years ago in a
small mom and pop computer shop in Panama City, Florida.

Hmmm, right next door! ;)

I was on
spring break, it was raining and I just started walking around (our car
had died as well... and yes, we had a good time). They still have
another copy sitting on the shelf in case anyone wants to go get it...
don't ask me where the place is again though, i have no clue.

How do you know they still have another copy?

Anyway, they must be easy to find in Europe, Palace Soft being an European
company...I think.

BTW, Jim, What magazine is CV+G? Does the poster mention which number it
was sold with?

Actually, it's Computers + Video Games (my typo with the + before).
Unfortunately it doesn't mention the issue on the poster :-( My guess would
be a 1988 or 89 issue though.

I still
haven't
found any Barbarian with it anywhere

I'd like t know which versions were released here in the states,
wouldn't mind hunting that one down.

The Death Sword and Axe of Rage boxes are completely different and
completely uninteresting (read, no Maria Whittaker on them ;)

Also, I remember Vixen, was the same, or very similar game engine to
 Thundercats. Hottie on the cover

Corinne Russell, other (relatively) famous british page-3 girl.

they just don't put hot chicks on
 enough covers anymore.

Many people consider Lara Croft hot. God knows why.

Does anyone else remember games like Turbo Girl,
Game Over, Phantis and Megacorp? Now THAT was cover art. either
that or being a young teenager at the time really engrained those in my
 head.

I remember Game Over, as the drawing was made by Luis Royo, a great

With the same...errr... box topic, I remember an arcade game called

 Entity.

Also, CE Forman has added on his page some information about Sex Vixens

Good point on that one Pedro. I have that similar poster from the UK
version of Barbarian II stored in plastic...very...nice. :-)

Hugh

:) Didn't Barbarian I have a poster too? Any chance you could tell me the
exact contents of each of them? And, more important, for which platform do
you have I and II?

I've seen Barbarian I and II everywhere, but usually either the C64 or
Sinclair Spectrum versions, with only the tape, cassette box (or whatever
that's called) and the inlay instructions. No large box, manual, poster,
etc.

For the same reasons (ahem) as Barbarian, another game worth collecting is
Vixen (Martech). Was this one ever released in the US? If so, by which
name?

Actually, Karl, you were close. It wasn't one of the Amber* RPGs (which I'd
love to get, no matter the language!) or the Arkania saga, of which I
really prefer the US version because I don't (yet) understand too much of
german and I really like the saga. It was actually Legend of Faerghail,
which I found both versions for sale, and I know they're both pretty
uncommon.

Hugh, although Barbarian and Death Sword have _completely_ different boxes,
in this specific case I'd say the UK version is the one worth having... you
know why. 0:)

But because I set a precedent with the Arkania games, I'm a bit inclined
towards Jim's opinion. I can't afford to get all versions of all RPGs I
find or I'd go broke just with german RPGs that crossed the ocean.

Any more opinions?

Hi Pedro,

Assuming it's the type of game I collect (i.e. parser adventure or anything
Infocom), I'd eventually want both as I'm big on package variations. Since
your scenario states that the game is for collecting and not for playing, I
probably wouldn't have a preference on which was obtained first.

 a) Buy X both in german and english (in case you choose this one please
choose also one of the other two)
 b) Buy the original german version of X
 c) Buy the US version, in english, of X

Thanks in advance for your opinions,
 Pedro

PS: Extra lump of sugar if you can guess which X I'm referring to. Hint:
 it's a RPG.

Axe of Rage was indeed Barbarian 2, but I don't think it was published
for the PC. I hope I'm wrong, though, as I would love to see it (I'm a
fan of the original US Death Sword -- in fact, Death Sword is probably
the #1 reason MobyGames exists, as Brian and I used to play it all the
time).

Hey, since Barbarian has been mentioned, I have a UK copy of Barbarian II:
Dungeons of Drax (the actual Palace sequel, not the Psygnosis game), does
 anyone
know if that game was ever published here in the states and if so under what
 name?

Well, I'm guessing it's one of the Amber games or the Schwarzeauge games
(can't remember what they called it here in the states, maybe realms of
  Arkania).

Now considering that I'm German, I'm a wee bit biased and woudl buy the
German version if I don't have too pay too much for it.

From a collection stand point, if both packages are of equal quality
(quite a few foreign games get a budget treatment over here... look at
the original Pizza Tycoon (originally Pizza Connection)).

I'm a purist, go with the original packaging!

I have this hypothetical question I'd like to present to all of you:

Imagine game X, made by company Y.
Company Y is from Germany, so X is released in german. X is then
 released
in the USA in english, by company Z. Same box, same contents, only
translated, and different company logo on the box.

Now you don't want to play game X, you just want it for your collection.
   What would you do?

   a) Buy X both in german and english (in case you choose this one please
choose also one of the other two)
   b) Buy the original german version of X
   c) Buy the US version, in english, of X

Thanks in advance for your opinions,
