https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS_(Web-Feed)und
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podcast#Podcast-Empfang

Aber ich bin zuversichtlich, dass die Profis beim Bund da mit
irgendeinem ebenso komplizierten als wie auch untauglichen und
halbgaren Ansatz hervorkommen werden. :)

Well, yes, if it serves the purpose, sure. Though if the
company/product has a bad reputation in terms of security and
spying on the user, I do think twice about using it. Skype is
one of these companies/products actually. As said before, I use

Hoi.

 1. it is highly unlikely that these stupid wannabe SPAM filters get the
response containing so many PTR records right. It is most likely
that either the software blows up or that it only ever considers the
entry it receives first.

Most mailservers just check if there is a PTR record at all and
if there is none, reject the mail with a 5xx DSN.

(Most likely the software blowing up will not even be remarked but
instead the mail will be rejected silently.)

Clever spamfilters will just add another score point to the spam
score and not just pass or discard a mail based on a single
criteria.

Under the line, it is likely not a DNS issue, but the inability by
some mail or AS systems resolving lists. Suspect my servers will
fail, too. Xaver, pls send private reply for a test from that system,
  anytime.

 It is also a DNS issue, depending on the number of results returned;
the size of a DNS/UDP response is limited to 1 UDP packet, which again
is limited in size. Not everyone uses DNS over TCP, and it is unlikely
to be adapted just because of such a stupid and useless SPAM filtering
 measure.

While Xari's Setup with tons of PTR records is plain stupid.
Xari, you should have a read about MX records. =:-)

But DNS uses UDP and TCP as I just checked. RFC 1035, Chapter 4.2 says:
The Internet supports name server access using TCP [RFC-793] on
server port 53 (decimal) as well as datagram access using UDP [RFC-768]
on UDP port 53 (decimal).

[swinog] Blacklist at bl.csma.biz

2007-11-02 Diskussionsfäden Martin Ebnoether
Hi Swinogers and Swinogettes.

Does anyone here know the blacklist at bl.csma.biz? One of our
users wanted to send a mail somewhere and it was rejected by the
remote mailserver because we are listed in that list.

Though, bl.csma.biz does not resolve. My understanding of
blacklist is, that if there is no result for the check (that is
based on DNS, right?), it assumes it is listed.

In that case, the remote mailserver, rejecting mails from listed
servers, would accept no mails at all? Now they will have
serious fun over there, since the remote server belongs to one of
the big US stock exchanges... =:-)

Oh and I fully agree that it is a very bad idea to block mails
on a single criteria.

Think of ICANN. The possibly mean to use any usual second-level domain

Oh yes. Pretty stupid.

Or they do register private TLDs, but propagate them only in their DNS
servers. So everyone has to use their name servers to resolv those TLDs.

Solutions like this existed for years. AlterNIC and OpenNIC,
just to name two of these alternate namespaces. How do you
explain to your grand-mother, she has to enter strange numbers
in a hidden field somewhere in the depths of her computer, just
to surf to http://www.hallo.oma/ ?

But maybe we are wrong altogether and Strato bought ICANN..?

Almost. The asymetric encryption is only used to negotiate a symetric

Mostly it's performance reasons.

SSH (which uses SSL as well) does the same. The session key is
renewed frequently, default of OpenSSH is 3600 Seconds (1 hour)

I'm not sure whether session keys are only negotiated over
asymmetric encryption initially or at renewal too. Anyone can

On the other hand though, that's the problem with nearly every

part of the SwiNOG-Community. Those guys can just as well read
the mails and answer to random topics they feel the need to.

RSS does not give you that possibility, you're readonly. A
perfect excuse to just consume and give nothing back
(information that is). I don't like that idea.

but anyway, a forum/blog is the wrong way... mail should be still the
way of communication for swinog members ,-)

Mail is as easy and flexible that it's even readable on a cell
phone or an old-fart PDA. Just because some of you have a shiny
new Ogo or Mulberry (whatchamacallit?) does not mean everyone
wants to replace his Palm IIIx now.

Finally, HTML-Mails with Flash and JavaScript do go the same
way, so don't even think about coming up with THAT!

[swinog] mirror.switch.ch overloaded?

2006-03-21 Diskussionsfäden Martin Ebnoether

Hi all.

I was just wondering why my favourite source of free software has
been overloaded over the past few days. I'm talking about the
FTP server of mirror.switch.ch[1]. It seems I cannot login
because too many anonymous users are already logged in.

Is it some attack or maintenance? Anybody know something?

I've seen the same problem; it seems to be the usual overload due to all
those Bebbian users. (To every one of them: Please use ftp.ch.bebbian.org

Why would they need daily updates when the whole distribution is

(to put it in your words =:O)

No, the HTTP interface had the same problem.

Yeah well, let's see about the upstream. I doubt this will raise
in the near future. Outbound traffic is expensive plus DOCSIS
Upstream takes place in the lower TV Band (VHF). Space is rather
limited there and most headend stations (uBR) only have one or
two connectors for upstream traffic (meaning upstream coming from
the modem, even though it's labelled differently =:-) So
basically all or even a big part of the customers modem share the
same upstream channel. This is gonna get very tight, even if you
use advanced modulations like QAM-256 (We normally use QAM-16 or
even PSK at very small ISPs).

Cablecom probably will offer greater bandwidths once they have
switched to digital TV becaus of digital TV is capable of
offering a multitude of TV programs over a single channel. And
with DOCSIS 3.0 one can bundle channels for even more bandwidth.
Needs new infrastructure (modems and uBRs) though.

I think CC has a big trafffic Problem. They must switch off many of the analog
Channels, when they want have more Traffic. They use some bandwidths for the
digital TV, and for HDTV they use for every Channel the Space of 2 analog
Channels... ok... With the compression od 1,5 channels...
I think this will be a bigger Problem...

Exactly. That's why they are urged to push digital TV. Personally
I'd love TV without snow (except winter sports or documentations
but let's stay on topic) but I will not pay more than for analog
TV, that's for sure. I have a Sat receiver and antenna at home,
picture quality is way better there of course.

HDTV, I don't see the improvement of having higher resolution
when it's compressed down for no good.

It's the same like with DAB. It's of no use being able to receive
DRS2 digitally, when it's compressed to 112 kbit/s. I would not
even go below 160 kbit/s even for pop music.

By the way: What ever happend to TV over ADSL? =:-)

ther ADSL TV but obviously it's not yet ready to be a replacement
for an existing TV set

Ok CC has on the Cinemas 1 Mbit more... But... i don't know... When you see a
footballgame... You have sometimes Pixel on the Screen. For fast movements on
the Screen is 1.5 Mbit to less. I say allways more then 3.5 Mbit is ok... 4.5
is good...

Picture quality heavily depends on the bandwidth, the used codec
and what will is shown in the picture (or movie). The two worst
things that can happen are fast movements or hard borders (like
in cartoons or animes). Try encoding a testing table and see how
good the alternating black and white stripes will come out.

If it's only IP, there is an implementation of IP over ICMP

So what? I have almost no traffic whatsoever. And with that low

Put that way, Swisscom will not upgrade speed, until Cablecom
upgraded yet another time.

And if you look at the speed distribution then 600/100 wins hands down
with IIRC about 80% market share. Whether this is because it is enough
bandwidth, or because higher bandwidth is too expensive is up to the
reader.

That's probably the reason for Sunrise offering a 150/50 abo with
up to 20 MB of traffic per month. If you have more traffic, you
