Hi Rich,

In my opinion, the Philly Inquirer has gone way overboard with website ads like the one that prevented you from reading the entire article about WPPM-LP 106.5 MHz FM in Philadelphia.

That portable radio you saw a photo of me using in that article is my Eton Satellit that I won at a recent SWLfest. It has a hot FM receiver and had no trouble picking up WPPM from a bench in Washington Square Park. It also has a RDS decoder and I'm trying to convince WPPM station management to implement RDS so casual listeners can see what station they're listening to. RDS could also be used more creatively than that.

I lament that RDS isn't used anywhere near how it could be used here in the states. Over a decade ago in eastern Germany I monitored a Saturday night techno dance show (on an FM station I can't recall the name of) with my Sangean ATS-909 and marvelled at the DJ's creative use of RDS to send shout-outs and other real-time comments to listeners. It was a perfect melding of forward-facing radio broadcast technologies. Cool!

Interesting picture of Ed tuning a portable radio too. Nice article although my reading was interrupted by a chance to win a free iPhone 6. Couldn't get out of that loop no matter how much I tried.

Nice piece. But on air next month? That explains why on my travels to Center City (medical stuff) yesterday and today I heard nothing.

WTHJ-106.5 is part of "Thunder 106" -- <http://thunder106.com>http://thunder106.com -- with its 1,450w off an antenna at 208m on WWSI-62's tower -- 39°37’53.00”N 74°21â€1′12.00”W -- in southern Ocean County. WTHJ has a quieting signal oon the car radio until about 2 miles east of the Airport Circle (intersection of US 130, NJ 38 and 70), Pennsauken.

Earlier in the fest thread I commented earlier on the 106.5 LPFM channel congestion. I now see there won't be any chance of hearing the results of Ed's work out here on the fringe of the Pine Barrens.
