As a note, in the old days we required people to enter NamesLikeThis
into the signup box. People still made up plenty of bogus names,
though.

I don't think we'll really deter people who really want bogus names.
What I'm looking for is a way to make sure people realize what they are
doing. You could call it informed dissent.

So running various checks we think will work to detect non real names
and prompting the user to acknowledge that a particular community
prefers real names and they choose to not by in.

I know several people who didn't read the why full names are important
page until after they had created an account, started editing and someone
pointed it out to them. Since we don't have any way to rename a user
they are now stuck or have to kill their account and start a new one. So
I'm thinking of legitimate users who just didn't read too carefully.

Another way to solve the same issue would be to find a way to allow for
renames, possibly through a workflow that requires human approval to
make the change to prevent abuse.

Thanks,
Alex

Re: [Sycamore-Dev] Real Names

2009-04-24 Thread Brent Laabs
It's feasible with the current database structure to allow renames without
screwing up the backend -- but it will of course break all of the links in
the wiki. I wrote a patch some time ago to allow users to change their
capitalization, though it hasn't been implemented yet. (Maybe to prevent
aSiAnUsErNaMe syndrome?).

Another alternative is to allow each site to display a message on the
account registration page. [wiki:davis] says: Please remember to register
with your [wiki:davis:Importance of using your Real Name]! It might be
more prone to abuse, though.

While I think we have the resources to handle the human approval of renames,
I'm not sure what we'd be checking for. We don't verify that a user is who
he says he is (unlike Facebook, who still won't let Sierra Student create an
account `_´ ) -- we also don't want to be legally responsible for people
making fake accounts. I guess you could put a limit of like one rename per
day or something, I don't know.

Still, it's an important enough issue to address. I believe it was one of
the reasons Rochester forked off (although they didn't like the shared
userspace idea in general). In an ideal world, we should be able to come up
with some way to ask users to create accounts with real names. Davis
benefitted from such a policy, and other wikis should be able to do the
same.

Pseudonyms are not as bad as role based accounts. If they registered as
pookybear and reveal either their name or share who they are on the page,
they shouldn't feel the need to change their account name. On the other hand
someone registering as CampusRec, or CranbrookManagement should close that
account and come back under their real name.

If implemented, this should only be enabled on a wiki-by-wiki basis.
Even staying wiki-spot-centric for a moment, only certain wikis buy
into the RealName thing. Not all communities think using RealNames is
a good idea and wiki spot in general doesn't interfere with such things.
