It seems to depend both on timing (sleeping helped) and the specific
phone (my Nokia phone didn't care either way). Perhaps that explains why
there haven't been more complaints about unexpected slow syncs with
phones.

Because the issue probably can't be reproduced except by the original
reporter (who's gone silent), I'm mostly interested in confirmation from
other users that the fix doesn't introduce any regressions.

Hi,
I cannot speak for runtime, but I was able to build the tarballs in
Fedora rawhide without any issue, more than that, I could remove the
gcc6 patch which Fedora uses. Thus looks fine here from the build point
of view.

Did you run "./autogen.sh"?
