Hi JT
To answer your points one by one:
Americans can't stand to see Americans lose
on the world stage or is it a more subtle racial thing?
The former. The indifference of the broad US public to anything not
involving the triumph of Americans is well known - hardly a controversial
view.
Actually, the woman who retired, Jong Song-ok of North Korea, is the
defending WORLD marathon champion. As far as I know, Fatuma Roba, the '96
Olympic champ, intends to compete at Sydney.

Privalova has been reincarnated as 54.21 winner of Russian
One possibility that never seems to be mentioned, but would add
audience interest is a mixed (men and women) relay. The teams
(a maximum of six at a time) could all run different MW patterns,
leading to lots of position changes and cliff-hangers in the course
of a race.

Now for the serious answer (referring both to my previous posting
and the second paragraph of Vulcan's). One thing that swimming has
which track does not is strokes. One could have a medley relay
where one "runner" crawled (one knee must always be touching the
ground), one "runner" hopped

well thanks a whole hell of a lot Jason--can I now change my earlier quote to
"the Olympics will be 99.99% drug free"?
The equivalent to the strokes in swimming are the distances in track. The
medleys would fit that description. I vote for making the 4x200m an official
relay. It would give us another race, and more interest would be developed
in the 200m, a bastard event. Could you imagine a team of Capel,

Back in '96 for the Boston Marathon, I had the honor of spending several
nights in the Elliott Lounge with friends. A interesting feature (aside
from Coach Boaz dancing with Alison Roe) was the TV set at 8' 1/4" above
the dance floor and a line of tape on the ground near the bar. When I

I love the 4x200 but the problem is you are going to wear out the top bodies
with too many of the same relays and thus end up with a diluted product. I
would like to see more relays of any kind added however.

I once saw a TV show where Larry Doubley jumped

getting up to speed over some circuitous route

For a TV audience to a sports event to be 50% female is a triumph of
marketing and targeted broadcasting. The 'natural' audience for sports is
over 90% male. Even if track's 'natural' audience is less male biased, to
achieve 50:50 is quite something. If that's what they achieved, the

It never ceases to amaze me how totally unscientific people on this list are
with regards to evaluating coaches. Most seem to think that the main criteria
are how many athletes reach elite levels or how many championships the team
wins.
To illustrate the fallacy in this line of reasoning,

I find that absolutely astonishing -
Eursport uses ex-athletes as commentators most of the time on the premise
that they are supposed to know what they are talking about. Sadly they
often don't know words. Thus we have "the young 20 year-old" or the
