Greetings, all:
Bill Collins of Missouri City, Texas, pushed the envelope of his age-group's sprint
records and perhaps his own body's limits March 23-25 at the USATF National Masters
Indoor Championships on in Boston -- setting one world indoor record and barely
missing a second.
Collins,
Brantley ran with a broken arm is a cast. One of the old-fashioned heavy
plaster things. One should note: In those days the Kenyan Juniors looked
like, well, kids.

In fact there were no Kenyan juniors at all in the '81 World Cross race. As
best as I can tell, there was no Kenyan junior team until 1985.
Competitve scene a lot different in '81, and during the years Americans won
junior race. Besides no Kenyans, there were no Ethiopians or any Africans
All-American sprinter Bobby Cruse of Kent State Univeristy will tell of his
spring break week in California with daily installments from an on-line
journal at www.kenttrack.com. Check the website daily for more updates.

In the DIII meet a few years ago (1996?), I think UW La Crosse lost the meet
because of a false start in the 4x4.

A few weeks ago when discussing the chances of the runners at World Junior
Cross, a well-known agent summed up the chances of one Dathan Ritzenhein,
against the Africans, with a perfunctory two words:
NO WAY.
Now, I have some easily remembered two-word phrases for you:
BRONZE MEDAL ... FIFTH
For the guys who are really strong in NCAA history ... ADD WHAT YOU CAN TO
an NCAA title list for D. runners ... starting with:
1. Suleiman Nyambui15 (1 cross, 7 indoor, 7 outdoor)
2. Gerry Lindgren 11 (?)
3. ?
4. ??
I had been primarily thinking of
Nyambui's titles per class year:
Frosh - Indoor mile, Indoor 3000m, Outdoor 10K = 3
Soph - Indoor mile, Indoor 3000m, Outdoor 5K, Outdoor 10-K = 4
Junior - Cross country, Indoor mile, Outdoor 5K, Outdoor 10K = 4
Senior - Indoor mile, Indoor 3000m, Outdoor 5-K, Outdoor 10K = 4
Nyambui won 12
Tom and others -
the results have been posted at www.lancertiming.com
I do agree, however, that it's a collosal blunder on part of tracs.net and
USATF not to have national masters championships results posted where people
can easily find them.
Did the meet really happen?

Unfortunately a good point here. What kind of track times have the junior
Africans in the top ten run over the past year?
One of the 17 year olds from Kenya ran 27:43 for track 10k when he was 16!!
Man, they are good. When Kepchumba "turns 20" he ought to be at 26:30 ...
right?
The crux of the problem is the lack of any proactive press and public
relations work in advance of the competition.
Hang around Boston long enough...you'll see what I mean.

I see that JaWarren Hooker is entered in all 3 sprints at Stanford - 100 /
200 / 400 ... Does anyone know if he actually plans to compete in all 3 or
is he just going to try for a double in 2 of them ???

To be completely honest, I think that Mt SAC may be only meet in that

In this discussion, one thought dawned on me--if Mt SAC is in a unique

I worry that
it's rather illusory. Story I read said it was 34 degrees with 35mph
winds and heavy mud. Extreme conditions can be a great leveler of talent.

You missed Rich Friedlander's M55 WR of 13:36.80 in the 3k walk, smashing the old mark
of 13:51.46. I guess walkers don't get any respect in the master's ranks either.

On the topic of results in newspapers from Derderian's earlier post, I
suggest that the problem is not so much pre-event publicity nor
submitting results (both of which were done for the masters meet), it's
that sports editors have their choice of what they want to print and have
