LQQK everyone. I've been told I've been brain dead for some time now. But I
clearly remember sitting high above trackside @ the Northeastern Cabot Cage
back in 1969 (1970?). I got my first high-paying gig as a field announcer. So
the boys are out there contesting the 35 lb. weight throw as a
Back in the late 60's or early 70's the Hoss brothers were doing some pretty
decent running around New England. One (Peter?) ran for Umass and the other
(Paul?) ran for Boston University. Anyone recall if they both made it to the
NCAA X-Country finals?

My understanding is that both ex-Massachusetts schoolboys, Sanchez (8:49) and
Andy Powell (4:02+), class of '99, have been injury-plagued since graduating
from Lynn Tech and Oliver Ames respectfully.
Both were among the all-time greats in Mass. Prep history.

Sorry I can't provide the URL, but there is a very informative piece in
today's Wall Street Journal on the London and Boston Marathons, interesting
indeed.

If we are going to move the centerpiece of our outdoor track field season
(read relay meetings) as suggested, then we might as well move the Boston
Marathon to the day following the NCAA outdoor championships in June
I don't get it

I was just going to saybefore Walt beat me to the punch line, Who cares
what the National Federation says!

Long before the FTC and the GBTC there were Grand Street Boys. Anyone from
the roaring 20''s care to chip in here?

For those of you who are into calendars, may I suggest you take a look at the
neat little Eastern Track calendar/schedule published by Walt Murphy.

wait
till the last event before the results are sent in?
We have to get a bit more proactive with our media efforts,
My two cents after a long weekend at Dartmouth.

I concur. And according to recent statements by the ex-mayor of NYC,It's
safer than Boston.
Happy New Year to all.

Wow! That's a mix. Puffy and the Marist Brothers...:-)

I mentioned earlier to one member on the list that Seb Junger was the New
Intercollegiate Champion at 1500 and 5K outdoors his senior year at Wesleyan.
I'm sure he placed in the Div.III Nationals, just not sure of the times.

Punishment seems awful harsh. In Massachusetts he would be asked to donate a
pint of blood, given a slap on the wrist and lecture school children about
drugs!
NeTrack
Embarassing..but not surprising.

Perhaps even a tad more cynical is my response to the person who posted this
question.
the best can be found in the high school coaching ranks.

What's there to comment on? Some athletes have it for the world stage, others
don't. Let's move on.

Equivalent of a Ken Stone? In New England we go one better. If you had been
paying attention to the list then you would know the hop-step-jump down Rt.
28 is just hours away. Pay attention.

I just sent a note to Walt Murphy. I have been monitoring this thread. I plan
to get to The Academy this week to check things further.
However, please remember, back in those years the Prep Schools kept their
own set of records, apart from the high schools. If he set some type of
record in
I thought someone mentioned that it was Phillips Andover (MA.) Academy.
Phillips Andover does not compete in the Mass. State meet, nor the New
England's. I believe the same is true for Phillips Exeter, although I need to
double check this.

The "AR" remains intact tonight, and the only American to better Salazar's

That cop out just doesn't cut it. Sure, just blame the lack of coverage on
the newspaper editors. That way we are sure to make good progress, and
enhance our public relations effort with the news media.
It's great to have our sport mentioned in the same breath as bowling.

The crux of the problem is the lack of any proactive press and public
relations work in advance of the competition.
Hang around Boston long enough...you'll see what I mean.

Did anyone catch Trammell's reaction time (0.228) in the second semi-final of
the hurdles? He must have been sitting down when the gun went off. Amazing
that he finished second.

that all "walkers" would no longer fall under the umbrella of the IAAF? After
all, are not all walkers "rank amateurs" in athletics?

...And Boston may have the best "Kenyan Marathon" in history
Cheers,

In his N.Y. Times article "Kennedy Returns After Olympic Disappointment,"
Marc Bloom writes"He has been much admired by his peers as an 'honorary
Kenyan." Passing up prize money in road racing, Kennedy stuck to the events
on the track.
A simple statement, but one often overlooked by
No. It's not guys like Meb and Abdi we need moving up to the marathon. We
need to coddle, teach, train and coach them towards their potential at 5K and
10K. And along the way we need to remunerate them for their success on the
track, just like the marathoners. This way 12:59 and 26:59 won't
It is difficult to provide a fair critique of meet coverage when so much of
the action is being condensed. I caught about half of the Berlin meeting on
Friday evening. I'd give the coverage I saw a B+. However, the effort from
the TV Commentators was A.
