[Tagging] Utility tag values replacement

2014-04-07 Thread François Lacombe
Hi,

I was told of the utility=* key when discussing about a connex topic.
http://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/utility#values

Some of the values associated with this particular key should (don't have
to but should) be replaced by more common and approved tags.

Here is some items. Don't do mass edit but look carefully to each object.
utility=pole = power=pole (or power=tower) - Only if the pole carries
power lines.
utility=power_sub_station = power=substation
utility=electric = power=* - We have to choose the value which best match
the need.
utility=electricity = power=* - Idem
utility=power = power=* - Idem
utility=power_station = power=substation or power=plant - Depends of what
is it actually, a plant or a substation ?

Have a look to power map features
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Map_features#Power

Feel free to let us know if you mind this replacement.

Cheers.

What about man_made=pole/mast/tower ?

I do not mind if you retag the real power facilities but think it is
enough to simply add your tags and leave the rest as utility=* does not
interfere with power=* .

 Feel free to let us know if you mind this replacement.

Please always try to get in contact with the original editor.

We had a discussion about how to tag telephone cable some month ago, do
you remember ? Maybe someone tries to better group these kind of
infrastructure.

Do not think that utility is the best name though as it is too
unspecific and leaves room for to much interpretation.

My 2 cents

 What about man_made=pole/mast/tower ?

It was discussed month ago on this mailing-list and it was a pain to get it
adopted, and then failed.
We do have power=tower and power=pole, I'll let the one who will try to map
telephone and CATV to get the consensus on multi-utility tower/pole.

Maybe it will be me, but I currently don't have time to spend on it.

At first sight yes, but each case is an example for new contributors and
what will they choose if both tags are on the object ?
There are no compatibility issues regarding 1000 objects.

It won't be the same when 1k of them would have been added.

My point is most of power=* values have been adopted and everyone get the
occasion to give its opinion where utility=* doesn't.

I'll ask him, indeed.

[Tagging] Feature Proposal - No votes for proposals opening_hours_holiday_select and opening_hours_open_until

2014-04-07 Thread Robin `ypid` Schneider
Hi

I created two proposals for which the time to vote is over but there are no
votes :(. Should we open the voting once again or what is the usual procedure in
such a case? The proposals are:

that voting for a proposal is nothing more than a rough indication of
the opinion of the people actually stated their opinion.
You could have asked at your local regular's table, in the forum or the
mailing list.

It's just a different tool to do the community communication process of
getting a common understanding about the meaning of specific tags.

If no one is interested in your tags, then probably it's of no use to
the community.
And we're too much of a Do-ocracy in this case. No one is interested in
people solving problems which only exist in theory.

If your tool can evaluate a specific patter, then do it and document it.
If it's reasonable then people will follow that tagging. If not a
discussion will arise in the future.

I would imagine most people would handle places without a specific
opening hour similar I would do. If it's not possible to specify some
core hours which are certainly open, I would not specify at all.
It's simply not possible to evaluate it automatically with a reasonable
effort. So if a business refuses to tell me when they're open, then they
have to accept that software giving hints about open now won't list
them. Similar to the open as long as customers are there closing time...
