areas for directional highways can be mapped _additionally_ as area:highway=*
but you should not delete the linear graph.
highway=* together with area=yes is for highway areas that are not directional
(I.e. they're omnidirectional).

as I've pointed out, s/he should use area:highway for this and keep the
linear
