Re: [Tagging] sport vs. leisure: High Ropes Course and Climbing Adventure

2015-08-19 Thread Bryce Nesbitt
I see the ropes courses as a type of amusement or theme park, and in fact
many of them are part of a larger facility.
Thus tourism, not sport or leisure.

http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:tourism%3Dtheme_park
with http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features/Key:attraction of
high_ropes_course,
and http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:website or website:mobile for
prices, booking details and operating hours.
A given park may have multiple attractions, such as a ropes course, a
slide, and a viewing platform.

This is a facility that generally must be booked in advance and traveled
to: thus tourism.

A smaller playground based zipline or flying fox would be tagged as a
playground feature.

[Tagging] sport vs. leisure: High Ropes Course and Climbing Adventure

2015-08-19 Thread Tom Pfeifer

There are competing proposals for facilities described as
Ropes Course in wikipedia [1], mostly:

leisure=high_ropes_course [2] , (21 uses, plus 30 leisure=.*rope.*)
sport=climbing_adventure [3] (155 uses)
sport=high_ropes_course [undocumented] (43 uses, plus 45 sport=.*rope.*)

As these facilities are currently spreading like mushrooms in the
forests (and woods), it would be good to agree about the tagging scheme.

First, is it sport or leisure? For me it lacks the regularity of personal
involvement for being a sport, I would see that as an adventurous activity
that is booked occasionally, like a rollercoaster ride.
Thus, leisure is the better key.

Second, is it climbing? The proposer in [2] correctly argues that the only
climbing is ascending a ladder. It is clearly distinguished from rock climbing,
for which we have the sport=climbing tag, as a mountaineering discipline.

It is mostly the operators of such facilities who use the term 'climbing'
in their description (climbing adventure, de:Kletterwald), harvesting on
the growing popularity of rock climbing. I have also seen the trade name Go
Ape,
however.

*=climbing_adventure can be misleading, since it does not describe the physical
feature of the ropes course, and of course a mountaineering trip can be a
climbing adventure as well.

Thus leisure=high_ropes_course is the best fit in my opinion, with ropes in the
plural form.
