FYI, we had a recent discussion about roundabouts controlled by
traffic lights on this list:

I would probably tag this in analogy to a Y-shaped junction, a
T-junction or a cloverleaf interchange: map the individual roads. End.

It is not a roundabout, so there are no additional generally approved tags.
Of course you could also add a junction=hamburger_roundabout, why not. (The
only risk is that the next armchair mapper, improving the map remotely,
would probably change this to roundabout because hamburger-roundabout is
not in his canon of acceptable tags).

[Tagging] tagging of a throughabout

2014-06-29 Thread Lukas Sommer
Hello.

How do I tag correct a Hamburger roundabout/throughabout/cut-through (see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roundabout#Hamburger_roundabout.2Fthroughabout.2Fcut-through
for a description).

My thoughts: The OSM wiki describes a roundabout at
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:junction=roundabout with these
points:

– where the traffic goes around a non-traversable island (or a void in case
of elevated roads) in the middle

– the traffic on the roundabout has right of way.

Both conditions are not true for hamburger roundabouts/throughabouts. So I
would say that a hamburger roundabout – in spite of its name – is not a
roundabout, but a traffic circle (see
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:junction=roundabout#Possible_misinterpretations
for details).
Consequently they are not tagged with junction=roundabout, but like normal
roads or carriageways (and using turn restrictions where appropriate).

Am I right?
