JSTL in Action

2003-09-07 Thread Shawn Bayern
Hi there (from law school)! :)

As I take a break from reading about civil rights in California, I just
wanted to point out that I just found out JSTL in Action is back in
stock at Amazon.com. (Some people here had pointed out that it was sold
out for a while, but Amazon's stock is now replenished.)

Hope that helps,

Shawn

Any chance of getting that onto Safari?

I know I sound like broken record here, but I love it and I think it's a
good deal for the writer/publisher as well.

I've not seen any Manning books on Safari. I presume this is a
big-business thing and not related to a specific book. Manning are quite
into eBooks, so maybe they're seen as Safari competitors.

As always, please let me know if you've got any questions.

Will it will be released on O'Reilly's Safari service? Books go out of date
so fast anymore that unless it's a timeless classic (like Joshua Bloch's
_Effective_Java_) I tend to just rent them from O'Reilly online.

I'm sure yours is a timeless classic, of course, but I still like to preview
the whole thing online before I fill up my bookshelf. :)

FYI, you can buy Shawn's book as an ebook (PDF) direct from the publisher
at:

http://www.manning.com/bayern/index.html

Then, if you later decide you want the paper version, you can deduct the
cost of the ebook from the price of that.

Unfortunately though, you can only deduct the cost of the ebook if you
buy the print book from the publisher which charges full price. The
Amazon price is $12.00 off. So if you think your going to end up buying
the print book, your saving money if you just buy now directly from
Amazon.

I always assumed Safari was only for OReilly books.

Must check it out a bit more sometime, maybe convince the company to
subscribe me for a book.

JSTL lets you configure any DataSource to access a database. The
DataSource may indeed implement connection pooling. Setting it up is as
easy as pointing to a pooling DataSource in your application's web.xml.

Now if only I learned to proof read or type :P

I skimmed through expression language portion of the book and found it easier to read
than the official spec.

Someone at work bought an electronic version and
ordered a few copies. If you are serious about using
JSTL, I would recommend it.

reading the spec isn't always as simple as one would
like. For example, the use of hashmap was totally
clear to me, until I read the section in shawn's book.

I must have read the spec a dozen times, but for some
reason I just did get it. Once i saw shawn's example
it was totally clear.

JSTL in Action: e-book

2002-07-17 Thread Shawn Bayern

Hi everyone,

I apologize for the shameless plug, but I wanted to correct something I
said earlier, and I thought the update might be useful to some people.

I had previously said the entire e-book for JSTL in Action might be made
available for free on Manning's site. This may still happen, but it's no
longer certain; Manning is deciding now. In the meantime, they have made
available the complete e-book for $13.50 (plus handling) at

  http://www.manning.com/bayern

If you order the e-book, you get a $13.50 discount on the printed book if
you purchase it through Manning. So a lot of people typically purchase
the e-book to get the info early, and then they buy a printed copy from
Manning when it comes out. The total cost is about what you'd pay for the
printed book anyway. (Of course, you can still just preorder from Amazon
for $27.97 via http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1930110529 )

Also, some sample chapters are online at the first URL above, if you want
to take a look. I told Manning to put up two free chapters that contain
lots of sample code, and they agreed.

Again, sorry for the shameless plug -- just thought it might be useful to
y'all.
