Our code is frozen for 3.9 and upgrading to a fully rewritten new upstream version definitely does not qualify for a freeze exception. Besides, MAT2 is not in Debian yet. For the record, the current plan is that MAT2 will replace MAT in Debian Buster and then we'll automatically switch to it.
