[Tails-dev] Tails contributors meeting: Saturday September 03

2016-08-23 Thread sajolida
The next Tails contributors meeting is scheduled for:

Saturday 03 September
tails-dev on conference.riseup.net (XMPP)
 9 pm in Paris
 8 pm in London
 3 pm in New-York
12 pm in San Francisco

Everyone interested in contributing to Tails is welcome!

Feel free to propose and prepare discussion topics. Either:

  - Raise them in this thread so that others can ask details and prepare the
discussion too.

  - Update the blueprint of the agenda:

https://tails.boum.org/blueprint/monthly_meeting/

  - Make sure that the discussion tickets that you want to treat during the
meeting are well detailed on Redmine.

If you want to get involved but don't know yet how, please introduce
yourself during the meeting, and be sure to tell us what you are
interested in.

The meeting might not be the most adequate time and place to properly
introduce newcomers to the development process, but at least it should
be a fine place to know each others, and schedule a better
suited event.

[Tails-dev] [GSoC] Tails Server - Final status report

2016-08-23 Thread segfault
Hi everone,

the GSoC ends this week. My goal was to implement the basis of the Tails
Server, which should include a GUI and a CLI to install, configure and
start onion services in Tails. I implemented a prototype which meets
this goal. There are nightly images [1] of Tails including this
prototype and the code is available here [2]. This is not yet a call for
testing, but there will be one at some point.

[1]
http://nightly.tails.boum.org/build_Tails_ISO_feature-5688-tails-server/builds/lastSuccessfulBuild/archive/
[2] https://gitlab.com/segfault_/tails/commits/feature/5688-tails-server

The current prototype does not meet all the requirements for shipping it
in Tails yet (which was not the goal of the GSoC), but it won't require
too much additional work.

These are some things that still need to be done before including
Tails Server in Tails IMO:
- Implement client authentication
- Run as non-root user
- Fix some UI issues
- Test performance on low end hardware
- Find and fix bugs
- Improve user documentation
- Write design documentation
- Write tests for Tails' test suite

I will definitely keep on working on this and try to finish it ASAP. I
don't know exactly how much time I will be able to spend on this from
now on, but a first version of Tails Server could be shipped with Tails
in early 2017 or even late 2016.

Cheers

From a web accessibility point of view, it's good to either have
alt="Something descriptive" or an empty alt="" - as said by xin.

See
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML/Element/Img#Attributes.
Quoting from there:

"Setting this attribute to an empty string (alt="") indicates that this
image is not a key part of the content, and that non-visual browsers may
omit it from rendering."

I did not look at the branch but it should not completely remove the
alt, just its contents when necessary.

Cheers!

Sometimes, images are only usefull to know what a thing looks like
(logo, some screenshots) and have no additional information who can be
add in a alt.

I know the importance of alt, on lot of websites alt are misused and are
just noise to blind people. Sometimes, the alt value have to be empty.

For exemple, in download page, I remove "Wait" alt because after you
have the text "Please wait".
Alt can be empty if the information was already in the text around.

About web version of my repo, it's a known issue, you have to use git.

Cheers.

alt-tags are important for blind people, even when they just describe
what the image says.

I could not review the branch from the website because the repo is
private or something, but I think accessibility in HTML always requires
alt tags, even if they are simply 'logo'.

I'm a bit confused by this request. Either the pictures convey some
useful information, and then they need an alt text, or they don't, and
then perhaps they should not be present at all, no? (But I guess I'm
grossly over-simplifying :) I'll leave it to sajolida to handle this.
