With Ubuntu 12.04, the performance of Unity on my Thinkpad X200 (Core 2 Duo, 8GB RAM) was slow, so I used the Gnome Fallback (which was Gnome 2). With Ubuntu 14.04, Gnome Fallback was no longer available, so I install Mate, and used that an alternative desktop. It mostly stayed out of the way of

Update: Lennart's pointers have been very helpful in getting to the root of the problem. I'm now seeing that even the shiniest-new version of Mint uses 4.10 and that Ubuntu 17.10 is only at 4.13. The new kernel can be installed on either through PPAs. It's a little work but far better than crashi
