Did I read on this list that Micro soft included a security protection
program in the 8.1 OS? The reason I ask is because my system came pre-loaded
with kaspersky security, and I can't inter act with this software.

They did. The security for Windows 8, and 8.1, is just Security
Essentials renamed as Windows Defender. The UI is exactly the same.
