Re: A time to have another look at Google Chrome
Hi Vaughan, Several months ago, I had become so discussed with IE 11 and WE that I also gave Chrome a look. IE 11 just kept crashing with WE and on many sites it just didn't read info in fields that needed input. So, Because I was also on the market for a new phone and was giving Android phones real consideration, I tried Chrome on my toshiba Laptop. Well, after just a couple of hours, I got the hang of it and quickly realized that mahy of the IE keyboard shortcuts were the same, and so I felt quite comfortable in a short time. I have not gone back to IE. I should also tell you that I have used the Chase bank site to pay credit cards and Chrome did very well. HOwever, for some unknown reason, Chase feels as though they must continue to change there webbsite and in doing so, they have it a bit more difficult to use. But, I did manage to get the job done. By the way, I have procured a new Android phone and within just a few hours I was very comfortable with the Talkback screenreader that comes with Android which supports a full touch interface. I have had it only a couple of weeks but I think I have nastered much of it. So, I suggest you stick with Chrome because it is much more stable with WE than is IE 11. Re: program that will allow you to restore your volume configurations
Hey Tom, sorry I didn't respond sooner. Your reply got lost until now I'm afraid, . I will do a bit of experimentation with your suggestions as soon as either I have the time or the guts, depending on which I have the most of . I really don't understand why the monitor's output audio device would react so negatively to muting anyway, and who knows, it might not ever happen that way again. Maybe I'll have my sighted daughter over here to give me some assistance in figuring this out. But it can't hurt I'm sure to play around a bit either, at least I don't think I can get irretrievably lost. It might not happen with two good eyes, but I might get stuck otherwise. Do I sound irresolute enough? Oh well Tom, I'll letcha know what happens. Thank you so much, Larry On 3/11/2017 5:56 AM, Tom Kingston wrote: Larry, In your case there is a solution. Set another synthesizer to use your onboard card and check the check box: Use this synthesizer as the backup synthesizer. If you have speech going out your monitor and mute it, reload Window-Eyes and hold down the left Shift key while doing so. You have to be quick on the draw with this, or you can reboot and hold down that key. It will tell Window-Eyes to use your backup synth. It will also turn apps off. So you have to remember to turn them back on, or, get things straightened out and then reload Window-Eyes with your usual default settings. Otherwise, most laptops or desktop keyboards have volume or mute controls on them today. Some are on the F-keys and you have to know how to toggle them between F-keys and shortcut keys. For example, on my Microsoft Natural keyboard I have what you would think were 13 F-keys. that thirteenth one is the toggle key. But I know most aren't this simple. Hth, Tom On 3/11/2017 3:20 AM, Larry Higgins via Talk wrote: Dennis, I'm actually hoping that someone can provide an affirmative answer to your question due to an issue I ran into the other day. My sound card is an on board Realtek on a Dell machine, but my hi def monitor has an output device that WE will use, but it seems that if I go to mute the thing that I lose speak altogether, and have to grope and hope in relocating my settings for my default card if I have need to return to my default card. I just thought it would be convenient to go this rout whenever I might wish to record using stereo mix so that I wouldn't be recording WE output at the same time. I guess this wouldn't be a problem as long as I can remember not to ever mute the thing, but if either I accidentally do mute the card, or if some other unknown issue should crop up, I would like to have a quick and sure solution toward regaining speech. So, if anybody has a possible solution to this one, at least two of us would definitely appreciate it. Re: program that will allow you to restore your volume configurations
Yes, you are right, that is a feature of Window-eyes. However, I think this only pertains to external sound cards if you unplug them. I do not think this would work with external monitors, as I do not have one to Tess with… But maybe I am wrong. Blessed be, Portia. Re: program that will allow you to restore your volume configurations
Larry, In your case there is a solution.
Please correct me, should I be wrong. And maybe I do not understand your issue totally. Far as I know, Win-Eyes always will fall back to your default sound card. Meaning, if you unplug your USB card, the built-in, onboard card will be the one used for output. Furthermore, a handful of versions back, it occurs to me, that WinEyes got a new feature implemented. Whenever you restart the screen reader will automatically attempt to unmute your sound card. Have not tested it, but that is what I have been under the impression would be the case. Again, with all chances of being wrong, I will be glad to be corrected on this, should anyone have different information on the matter.
