RE: What is a KNFB Reader?

2017-11-22 Thread Steve Jacobson via Talk
Robert,

The KNFB reader uses a camera in a phone or other divice to take a picture of a
document. Then, it performs optical character recognition (OCR) and reads the
content. Its strongest point is that it performs the OCR in such a way that it
can start reading very quickly. As Josh says, it can be made to process files
as well. It takes some practice to know how far away from a document to hold
the camera and to aim, but there are tools to help with that. There are other
OCR apps that are cheaper, but all in all, I've been happy with the KNFB
Reader. It does take practice, though.

My experience has been regardless of how good an app is, different apps
sometimes provide the best results so one needs multiple tools at their
disposal.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

And it's a fabulous OCR which is how it started. I have it on my iPhone
and can read just about anything imaginable. Think beyond a document
reader. I've read food boxes, cans, button labels and serial numbers on
gadgets, etc. It also works pretty good when you have to read your
computer screen or any other kind of display.
There's also a free one from Microsoft called seeing AI. It's useful but
doesn't compare to KNFB when it comes right down to it.

Tom

Hi,

I got my 2018 jaws disk in the mail today also.  I haven't installed it
yet, cause I'm still primarily using Window-Eyes, but I will eventually
install it on my windows 10 machines.

RE: What is a KNFB Reader?

2017-11-22 Thread Olusegun -- Victory Associates LTD, Inc. via Talk
And, in Android land, we have so many apps that work even better than the
KNFB Reader for merely pennies on the dollar! I think that in a few years,
may be weeks and months, many blind folks in Android land will slowly begin
kissing the KNFB Reader goodbye! Heck, there's even one in Android land,
though experimental at the moment, that will scan and read handwritten
stuff.

Sincerely,
Olusegun

RE: Program to reset (if necessary( the Windows screen reader flag.

2017-11-22 Thread Olusegun -- Victory Associates LTD, Inc. via Talk
Bernie, it's my job that ties me much to much to Windows! I own and operate
a durable medical equipment & supplies storefront. The apps I need for
keeping required government records have not been ported over to Android at
the present moment. There's no way I can submit claims for payment in
Android or Apple land and I have no idea when those who write apps for the
DME industry will ever cross the rubricon.

Like you, I don't want Jaws even though I can use the screen reader
proficiently. I did not take up the FREE MIGRATION offer from Window-Eyes
to the Shark as I don't want to be beaten! I don't have enough blood to
share with a shark!

I have another business line that I am pursuing. It is that of a coffeeshop
and, for this one, it will be all Android bar-non. I have no plans to do
anything with Windows10. I'm slowly migrating off XP into Windows7 land,
but I think that's where I'll stop.

My coffeeshop won't launch for a while yet 'cause I'm trying to get
additional funding by way of a loan and the paperwork to be furnished come
from more than enough trees to fill a forest.

It is heartwarming to know that I'm not the only one flying the Android
flag. Today, I did surprise myself: I processed an order on my phone and
tablet using a bluetooth keyboard. I had, and stil do in some shape or
form, found the Talkback keyboard commands somewhat intimidating. I know
the sequence of keyboard commands for both Jaws and Window-Eyes, but the
ones for Talkback are not syncing for reasons I can't fathom. I also
succeeded in sending a WhatsApp message to a pal across many a thousand
ponds. I don't plan on giving up on the mastery of Talkback keyboard
keystrokes; I will keep beating on it until it submits to my whims and
caprices.

Aside from the challenge outlined herein, like you, I am beyond redemption
and certainly too far away from the point of any return to the status quo
when it comes to walking, working and playing with Android! I am so glad I
made the commitment nearly five years ago when an Android toy landed in my
wee, small, snugly hands!

Sincerely,
Olusegun
Denver, Colorado

Re: What is a KNFB Reader?

2017-11-22 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk
Actually I seldom use the field of view report. It was fine when I first
got the app. But once I got used to reasonable placement of the phone
for the picture I stopped using it. Then again, I'm usually not using it
for critical reading where I need the absolute best. In that situation I
would use it. So it's not totally necessary. Just my opinion.

Imagine you are a student in college. You have some paper handouts that you got

the knnfb reader app. And then you hold the phone a foot above the page. And
then you press the field of view report button first making sure you are
pointing the camera on the bottom of the phone down towards the page. Then you
hit field of view report button you double tap it on the phone’s touch screen.
You hear your phone say outloud with its screen reader:

All four corners of the page are visible.

Then holding the phone as steady as you can, you double tap the take picture
button. The phone snaps a photo of the page, does OCR on the text, and reads
the text out loud to you. And you can scan whole entire books very very fast
with just the 8mp camera on your smartphone.

Re: What is a KNFB Reader?

2017-11-22 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk
And it's a fabulous OCR which is how it started. I have it on my iPhone
and can read just about anything imaginable. Think beyond a document
reader. I've read food boxes, cans, button labels and serial numbers on
gadgets, etc. It also works pretty good when you have to read your
computer screen or any other kind of display.
There's also a free one from Microsoft called seeing AI. It's useful but
doesn't compare to KNFB when it comes right down to it.

Regards,
Tom

Re: Program to reset (if necessary( the Windows screen reader flag.

2017-11-22 Thread Bernie Perella via Talk
Hi Olusegun,  Well, I can understand your point of view, but for me, I
think I have now crossed the point of no return.  I am so amazed at how
good I am finding Talkback on Android.  I have had almost no problems
with it on my phone.  And, unlike the possibility of moving to Jaws, I
have found the learning curve to be easily managed.  So, while I hope
that somehow, for those who might need it, WE can continue to live a bit
longer, but unless there are many volunteers to support such an effort,
I believe it will be difficult to keep up with the evolving software
advances and that is where I think Apple and google have a real advantage. B

Re: google home and chrom cast

2017-11-22 Thread Lloyd Rasmussen via Talk
One thing I can say: you don't turn a modern TV set on or off from its AC
plug. They are powered up, in a low-power state, all the time. There are,
however, many TV sets that interact with the internet in various ways,
including some of them that run Android and its TalkBack screen reader for
access to menus, program guides, etc.

Good luck in your research.

Subject: google home and chrom cast

Hi:

Isome friends are still here on the list, maybe some one could help

I have been to best buy regarding google home and chrome cast and each time
I go I get a different answer.

So, if some one here has one, mmaybe some help

If I have chrome cast and google home installedproperley

If I buy a smart plug for the ac outlet, can I just speak to google and say
turn tv on

As above and chrome cast connected to the computer, can I ask google to turn
to a tv tvstation (cable)

If I have the spotafy app, can I request a song to be played through the
google home

If I have a movie app and or a utube app, can I ask google for a movie or a
utube by name

I have been told google home includes chrome cast and I have also been told
I need to purchase chrome cast

Other then turning on and off home door locks, lights and soon, is there
anything else I could do as a total blind chap, and very old, (smile)

Sometimes when you go in a store, even you tell them your are blind, they
seem to think this guy can really ssee.

I do have yifi

Sorry for the ramble, but, I think only one who is blind can help and I
appreciate all who help
