This is a great initiative, but there's a lot of room for improvement.
There are two big things that would increase the odds of adoption for a set
like this:
- Remove the containing boxes. The boxes hurt legibility because every icon
has the same silhouette, and also makes it difficult for the
Saman remarks are right.
I wonder: you use a wiki, could it be edited to propose alternative
icons and share the refinement burden ? Is it possible to do so while
keeping a common style?

Hi all,
a set of more than 1000 POI icons for OSM maps and OSM editors has been
released today.
The main purpose of this icon set is
a) covering all OSM POI tags with at least 1000 occurrences according to TAGINFO
b) provision of the most common key-value combinations for each icon
c)
One word: huge !

The original SJJB icons as well as the icons newly designed are provided
under the CC-0 license and therefore can be used for any commercial or non
commercial mapping application.
(...) Some of the icons I found in the OSM wiki have another license.
Please respect that.
