The map style on the osm.org website is called "openstreetmap-carto".
It's developed online here
Normally we map schools as areas, in which case they show quite prominently as
yellow areas. The tag is put on the area of the grounds. Mapping something so
large as a node seems quite odd to me.

From my understanding, school icons are not displayed in the default OSM
(that is not the case of library, restaurant, gas station, ... elements)
