[Talk-ru] Master City: Let's play with OpenStreetMap
Hi, thanks to OpenStreetMap and his team I have just released a new application, currently only for Android but if it hasa bit of success I have already set the output on the iPhone and iPad, called Master City. The application is actually a game where, with a double-click, you have to find 5 cities on the map. The data can be filtered by continent or country and choose from 3 different levels of the game. Furthermore, the application does not require access to the internet or wi-fi because, at the moment, everything is contained in the application itself. If you want to take a look under the page on the store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.danelli.mariofeature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5kYW5lbGxpLm1hcmlvIl0. I highly recommend you let me know if there are improvements (obviously) and such. In addition to the game itself I think can also be useful to know OpenStreetMap for people of all ages (from 10 up can also be used as an exercise in geography). Obviously in the OpenStreetMap spirit the game is completely free and without ads. Thanks again to all who in recent years have been mapped and those who have just begun. Re: [OSM-talk-be] Openbaar vervoer/Transports publics
Re: [OSM-talk] Comments On New Tile Layer Guideline Process
Hi, It would be possible (perhaps even easy) to filter the available tile list based on the current bounding box and current zoom level. No reason to show 100 layers that don't work at the current position in the map. My point is that the main osm.org is our front page. If we loosen up, we will be able to show off the amazing work that is happening elsewhere with the OSM universe. For example, I did not now about ÖPNVKarte before this thread. I think that ÖPNVKarte is really, really good, and honestly if that map does not make the cut, clearly the bar is set very way to high. There was a thread just yesterday about bus stops showing that people are confused about the wiki, what is rendered on osm org, etc. Design decisions should not be made by *any* administrative focused OSM committee. We are wiki based project. If you trust us enough to edit the map, edit the wiki, etc, it should also flow to this aspect of the web site. Given the nature of this project, this just sticks out as out as out of step with how everything else is run. JOSM is doing it right philosophically and is getting good practical results. The process should be focused on working out technical and license requirements. Perhaps, you can use the current process for the hard coded layers. Otherwise it should go into a wiki page just like JOSM. Would also want to make it easy for users who don't understand tiles to see more breadth than is there currently. One other improvement might be to add zoom restrictions to certain tile sets. Everyone would like to see watercolor tiles on osm.org. Restricting/warning to some reasonable zoom level that Stamen can support (12?) would at least give the option. So what do we need? I'm also shying away from the term enforce which is too strong. The JOSM validator has multiple severity levels; I think that the check we are talking about should be a notice. Perhaps a warning but certainly not an error. at least one localized name to be equal to the name attribute, mappers will either be offended and leave the project or they will find a solution, imagine name:communityagreement=Bruxelles - Brussel - just to make sure the name the community want's to see in the name tag and rendered on the most prominent maps. Clearly we don't want that. But I was suggesting to improve the heuristic to deal with this usecase. Is there another naming convention that I'm unaware of and that wouldn't work with this algorythm ? I assume that if a weird naming convention is widespread, the algorythm will be fixed quickly. If the algorythm can be relatively free of false-positives, I think it should be implemented. It's just a handy hint to help mappers remember an agreed-uppon convention. It's not enforcing a tagging scheme, as that would be a silly thing to attempt in OSM. Concerning the agreed-uppon in my previous sentence, I still think the alternate proposal of defining a default language per region is (on top of not being implemented by any current renderer AFAIK) not a workable solution. Nice to have a a fallback from a renderer's point of view, but not something that mappers should depend on. Some design work and little bit of front end and rails coding. Pull requests are the reality of improvements to osm.org. -Mikel * Mikel Maron * +14152835207 @mikel s:mikelmaron From: Jason Remillard remillard.ja...@gmail.com To: talk@openstreetmap.org Sent: Friday, February 22, 2013 11:27 AM Subject: [OSM-talk] Comments On New Tile Layer Guideline Process Hi, This is the wiki document that contains the process for adding new tile layers to the main osm page. On the other hand, it should be very easy to check that if a place has at least one name:xx tag, it should also have one that matches the name tag either inside the editor or via a bot. Not sure about that. Up to know (as far as I know) some areas of the world decided to use a combination of two languages or name transcriptions in the name tag, like Japan [1] or Brussels [2]. A bot would contradict a working local community decision here, why I would oppose to automatically enforce that by a bot or to show that as en error by default. You're right, that's a false-positive right there. It could be fixed by improving the heuristic, but I'm not sure it's worth the trouble. JOSM users are used to ignore some types of validator warnings, and I dare hope that any bot admin wouldn't let it run without carefull checking. This might change as soon as the most prominent/important osm maps like our mapnik rendering support setting the language like in Jochens Multilingual Map project, but up to then it's IMHO a bad idea to enforce tag wars in multilanguage areas due to bugs raised by some bot that tries to enforce a name:xx being equal to name. Looking forward to that, but it'll probably be a while before we have it ? But even if all renderers become multilingual, as long as there is a plain name tag, there'll be arguments about which language to put in it. I have been thinking about this for a long time. I mostly map in Korea, where we have adopted the format name=Korean (English) together with the separate parts in name:ko=* and name:en=*. In some places there are official signs with Chinese, Japanese and other languages too, which can be added in name:xx=*. Sometimes I think having multiple languages in name=* is a Good Thing, sometimes not. And if I was going to recommend something I think it has to have a simple and obvious rule. I now think it *is* a Good Thing, and here's why. I recently travelled to Laos. Laos has its own language (Lao), but for a time it was a French protectorate, and these days English is not uncommon. Many of the road signs in the capital, Vientiene, are written in Lao script and French. In another town I visited, Luang Prabang, they are written in Lao and English. Similarly, businesses are often signed in Lao and French or English. From the point of view of a visitor, it would be very useful to me if OSM's Mapnik map was labelled with whatever is printed on the sign. Then, as I walk around, I can read the signs and see the same thing on my map. Even if I don't speak the language I can match the symbols. As a mapper, I can do this by setting name=* to whatever is on the sign (which may be Lao only, or Lao and another language). I can also tag name:lo and name:fr or name:en with the separate parts of the name taken from the sign. So, if I had to suggest an easy-to-follow set of rules for multilingual tagging I'd suggest the following: 1: name=* Whatever is written on the sign (with several languages if present) 2: name:xx=*Whatever is written on the sign in a single language. 3: name:xx=*can be added for any language even if it's not on the sign. I'd also add that it's okay to have redundant tags, i.e. in England the names are generally in English only, so name=* == name:en=*, but that it's also okay to omit this, i.e. renderer requests name:en=*, but it's not available, so name=* is returned. In Laos, I picked up a Japanese version of the Vientiene tourist map. Everything was labelled in katakana (a phonetic Japanese script). I wish we could just import it... Best wishes, Andrew PS I just wanted to add that I am using OSM exclusively now for all my local tourist activities. I use a guide book (or WikiVoyage) to tell me what's fun and interesting to do, and OSM to help me find it. If OSM is not good enough then I add more detail when I get there. Actually, I'd like to thank the Munich contributors for helping me find things in the city and get around very easily last time I was there. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

[Talk-ca] Master City: Let's play with OpenStreetMap
Možnost exportovat plnohodnotně do GPS navigací není.

Je me doute.

[OSM-ja] Master City: Let's play with OpenStreetMap
The application is available in Japanese too. The assignment can be found in the credits section of the settings. Mario Danelli ___ Talk-ja mailing list Talk-ja@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ja

ikiyaです。 私も宇野さんの意見に賛成です。 スケジュール的には午前にフィールドワーク、午後、講習、マッピングトレースが楽ですが 宇野さんが言われたようにスケジュールの最初はレクチャーの意味でのミーティングがあってよいと思います。 初心者が多いような場合、ミーティング(簡単な座学)を始めに行って、 次にフィールドワーク(短め1〜2時間程度)、その後、講習兼ねたマッピングトレースがベストかと考えます。 屋内の会場を借りる場合、時間に制限(午前午後両方借りるのが難しい)があれば、 スタート時のミーティングはお茶できるお店での自己紹介、打合せでレクチャーを済ませてもよいと思います。(少人数の場合) --- On Sun, 2013/2/24, nabet...@caldron.jp nabet...@caldron.jp wrote: 鍋太郎です。 助言ありがとうございます。 On Fri, 22 Feb 2013 11:17:57 +0900 宇野泰行 2gpros...@gmail.com wrote: 午前中の活動 ・スマホやロガーでGPSトレースを取得 ・Pushpinなどモバイル用のエディタを使って、現地で直接編集 ・デジカメで写真を撮る ・紙にメモを取る Field Papers(http://fieldpapers.org/)や、Waling Papers( http://walking-papers.org/)を使って、マッピングする区域の地図を事前に印刷しておいてメモ用紙にすると良いと思います。 紙に印刷するというのは、やっていませんでした。 確かに必要ですよね。 午後 会場に集合してJOSMやPotlatchなどで編集。 初心者の方は、OSMにどんなPOIを入力できるか(/できないか/するべきでないか)わからないと思いますので、当然外で記録するべきもの/するべきでないものもわかりません。 「スマートフォンを持っている方はこのアプリを使ってGPSトレースしましょう」 「○○や××のようなものを見つけたらメモを取りましょう」 「○○○は記録しなくて良いです(例:個人宅の表札など)」 と、マッピングパーティー冒頭で外での活動をレクチャーすると、初心者の方も入りやすいかなと思います。 レクチャーが大事ですよね…… そのあたりの準備が肝なんでしょうね。 検討します。 ありがとうございました。 -- ++ 倉澤 望(鍋太郎) KURASAWA Nozomu (nabetaro) nabetaro @ caldron.jp GnuPG FingerPrint: F3A9 35FC C5D5 7FBC 7009 895A D5BE 94B9 4E90 7A5F ++ ___ Talk-ja mailing list Talk-ja@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ja ___ Talk-ja mailing list Talk-ja@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ja

[Talk-GB] OSM-GB (was Branding)
I've been paying a bit more attention to OSM-GB because I caught one of their recent blog posts which indicated that a road name nearby was incorrectly named (Gregory Street in Lenton), see http://www.osmgb.org.uk/blog/?p=338. Accordingly I've spent a bit of time checking my original sources for mapping this street as Gregory Street versus Lenton Lane (as in OSGB VMD). I've now checked a number of sources, as well as my own mapping base data, and am satisfied that I am correct (the main case is address numbers). Similarly, at the North edge of Nottingham there is a mismatch between OSGB OSM for Queen's Bower Road. Again addresses (not on OSM) and NaPTAN data support the OSM view. (Will probably post on Maps Matter about this in detail). If OSM-GB is truly to allow the improvement of OSM data it needs to do a few things: - Recognise that OSM might from time-to-time be better than OSGB (this is after all one reason why councils might want to use OSM). - Provide information which is easily used by the OSM Mapping community (more below). - Engage with the OSM mapping community more directly. The last minutes on their website have apologies from A. Alan (I presume this is Andy Allan) representing OSM. I have been playing around with OSM-GB's web services (mainly WMS WFS). I've failed to get anything back from some of the WFS bug services, and the WFS polygon bug service works but has very little information as to what they think the polygon bug is. I've cross-checked against OSM Inspector to look for geometry errors for a selected range of polygons. One or two polygons with errors are building polygons with highways through them (in the cases I've checked perfectly valid OSM mapping: although we still haven't got a good way for doing this kind of mapping neatly. The WMS bug service is not really useful. Bugs really need to have a decent typification (as in OSM Inspector), so I won't want to invest effort to find out why OSM-GB thinks something is wrong. At the moment OSM Musical Chairs, ITO OSM products and OSM Inspector seem more useful for identifying and fixing bugs. Harry has altered our wiki to keep the subject of an OSM-GB chapter separate from the OSM-GB service. Perhaps we could add their blog to the blog aggregator which might improve dialogue. I know James Rutter and Tom Chance make use of these services and may know more about how they work. The branding issue is something else again. Does anyone else have any thoughts?
