Dear all,

Which is the more common / preferred format for csv
lat, long, name or long, lat, name? and why do you prefer one over the other?
(eg. less hassle, less clicks to import csv to common GIS softwares)

If I am to recommend to ordinary people a free conversion utility, which
one? (my 2 preferred utility have different csv format)

If i use gpsbabel's generic (Comma separated values) option (eg. kml to
csv conversion)--- gpsbabel -w -i kml -f filename.kml -o csv -F
filename.csv
csv will be in this order--- lat, long, name

If i use another easy-to-use/free/multi-platform KMLCSV (from
http://choonchernlim.com/kmlcsv/ )
kml to csv conversion will give you--- long, lat, name

KMLCSV is very easy to use and allows ordinary people to view the POI's on
built-in google maps for quick verification. easy to install, easy to
distribute, virtually idiot-proof.

GPSBabel is universal, has gui and  command line, but has too many
option-buttons that can be confusing for ordinary user.

or is there a way gpsbabel can convert (kml to csv) or (osm to csv) in
long,lat,name csv format?

Thanks,
Rally

Just my opinion: when people talk about co-ordinates, they normally talk
about Lat and Long (almost never Long and Lat), so they should probably
be in that order! I'd say gpsbabel has it right, and your other software
is swimming against the tide.

The advantage of XML formats as opposed to CSV, is that they specify
that each point is either lat/lat or long/long so there is no
ambiguity.

Dear everyone,

I had a meeting with Department of Health (DOH) IMS division on the
possibility of collaborating with the OSM-PH community.  No clear
plans yet on the collaboration but I would like to put forward the
discussions in this list.

= Overview =
Basically, DOH intends to improve their database for the location of
health facilities in the country.  They will use the data on several
information management of the Department.  At the moment, they have
several database developed in various projects.
Each db uses a different system but one thing they lack is a uniform
geographic identifier.  An example of the db is available in the
Unified Health Management Information System portal [0].  This online
portal lists ~21,000 health facilities all over the country.

At the moment they were able to geocode ~4,000 locations [2] (~20%).

= What they need from OSM =

A couple of ideas that were discussed are:
- Verify the location of the 4,000 geocoded facilities in the
existing OSM data.  Right now, there isn't any clear evaluation on the
accuracy of the locations (a process of Q/A is now being developed).
Some facilities are actually in Sulu Sea!  Check out the southern part
of Negros island [2].
- Fill in the gaps. the IMS division have limited funds to
individually verify and take GPS readings of each facility.  OSM data
can possibly fill in the gaps.  Using the Overpass turbo [3], I was
able to check that we have ~1,100 amenity=hospital ways and nodes.
Note that some maybe duplicates and I have not included other health
facilities like barangay health centers (tagged as amenity=clinic
clinic=public [4]).
- Ask the community to map more health facilities.  The only
additional tag they want included is the Health Facility Code (an
alphanumeric code similar to NSCB's PSGC [5]).  This code will allow
them to link the OSM geometry into their health facility db.
- Train DOH staff to edit OSM.
- Build some easy to use tools to collect data in the field.

= Pending issues =
As with most government data, they are available only on a
non-commercial use.  Specifically, the DOH generated locations.  For
the other information in the online db, they are OK with public access
without restrictions. This will be in conflict with OSM's ODbL.  A
workaround discussed was to separate the DOH db with OSM's data
points.  No public db will be distributed that integrates both data
sources.  Is this in compliance with the ODbL?  If not, what are other
ways in which we can use OSM data in relation to DOH's plans.

Everything I've listed are open to discussions.  I included here two
people from DOH to keep them aware of the discussions. (@ Steeve and
Mark, please subscribe to our mailinglist [6] to keep track of the
discussions)

Regardless of what DOH intends to do, I encourage everyone to include
health facilities in your own list of things to map.

Thanks!

Dear everyone,

As some of you maybe aware, we are on the 2nd week since Typhoon
Bopha/Pablo struck large areas of the Philippines.  Several
humanitarian agencies are now deployed to assist in the response.
MapAction [1]  is requesting updated road and other information to
many inaccessible areas in the region.

tracing.  Right now we have limited imagery coverage (only Bing and
OrbView-3) but you can trace a lot of information from already from

Advance thanks for helping.

database to support the response.  Description of the activity below:

Data entry support/leadership: We may have a few thousand surveys

I am currently coordinating this with a local university in Davao

 me know.

 2.  MapAction [1] is looking for an updated road data.  While I
believe most of the major roads available in Bing imagery is now
traced, we lack data for minor roads particularly for the remote
areas.  Orbview-3 can augment this coverage, a few I already added.
along New Bataan and Maragusan [0].  I am waiting for MapAction's
response on what specific areas they need road update.  Pending this
information, I request mappers to continue digitizing roads in Bing

 (waterway=river) and settlements (place=neighborhood,village,hamlet)

the country. Most households, when they have broadband connections at
all, have an average maximum speed of around 1 Mbps. Actual speeds are
much less than that.

I did a ping to the OSM server from my home and I get around 400ms in
terms of latency. But when you're editing in JOSM and downloading
plenty of data, and especially if you also download GPS points too,
the download and upload of data takes several seconds. And once the
data is downloaded, JOSM will spend some time to parse the OSM XML
data and to process it for editing, and this depends on the speed of
one's computer. Given that kind of editing situation, latency is a
small problem and might not be a best target for improvement. (See
Amdahl's Law[1].)

On the other hand, setting up a server in HK would also serve many
Asian OSM communities like Japan and Indonesia. While this does not
specifically target the OSMPH community, and might not foster a
technical community, serving the Asian OSM communities might be a
better reason for the investment than simply trying to solve network
latency problems.

I also recommend osmand for android it supports:

- offline map and routing
- voice activated routing
- gps log record and direct upload to osm
- point edits to osm

The Data Working Group is beginning to revert some copypaste remapping and
similar problems that did not make it onto the bot list for one reason or
another.

The tools being used aren't the fastest so we do not have a definite ETA.

This should not significantly impact normal mapping although uploading
frequently is always a good idea.

Dear list,

I got this message from Xycris.  I did check the area of concern, but
I didn't find any obvious errors.  Here's another message he/she sent
me privately inclduing coordinates for routing tests.

Good day Sir Emmanuel,

First and foremost, thank you very much for the effort of bringing a
Philippine map for GPS enabled devices.

I have just registered to OSM but I am reluctant to make any edits for
I don't know how to do it that I might just sabotage the works laid by
many other contributors.

Here is the error Information made by MapSource:

App: MapSource
At: 8/13/2012 5:25:43 AM (UTC)
OS: Windows 7 (64-bit) Service Pack 1
Processor: x86, Processor Level: 6, Processors: 4, Model 42 Stepping
7, RAM: 8297160
MPL_MAP.CPP-2243-6.16.3.0

Products Installed:
Name: OSM Philippines 20120810
IdL 41877505
Version 1.0
Type: Standard
Map: 63240005
Error code: 3

Here is my description as to how I came up with the error:
MapSource gives an error when creating routes for a certain stretch of
road, namely the Tubod Highway in Iligan City, Lanao del Norte,
Philippines. This error can be observed by making a route from Cagayan
de Oro City to Kolambugan or Ozamis City and vice versa. The error is
specifically generated when routing from the following Tubod Highway
coordinates: N8 12.544 E124 13.106 to N8 13.212 E124 14.505 and vice
versa.

I don't know how to edit that in OSM but I found that along that
stretch of the highway, two or three gates were in place. I am
guessing these gate markers are cauing the error in MapSource. But I
am not sure if this is really the case cause I haven't edited it.
Traveling on that area, I believe the gate was meant for the entrance
and exit of the now closed National Steel Corporation and not on the
highway. There are no gates on the highway itself. The National Steel
Corporation is located near the sea side of the Tubod Highway.

Sincerely,
Xycris

Dear all,

I am currently working with the German Red Cross and hoping to put on a
mapping training by End of August, beginning of September with the
Philippine Red Cross in Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro City.

Is anyone from your team based in Mindanao or would anyone of you like to
present OSM initatives in the Philippines via skype?

Just a short intro to OSM - the training is for people with no prior
mapping experience but I would like to offer as many different inputs as
possible ;)

With best wishes,

The forest polygon in Mt. Palay-palay was tagged as a national park

They had a project launch last January 31 and February 1 where the
target area to be used as an example was North Triangle in Quezon
City. Rally attended that event and we were all pleasantly surprised
to see OSM used as the map. You can check the write-up of that event
 from Smart here:
 http://www.um-smart.org/blog/2012/02/08/smart-e-news-february-2012/

Some photos from that event showing OSM maps are the following:
 http://www.um-smart.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/12-2-7_Manila-Mapping6.jpg
 http://www.um-smart.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/12-2-7_Manila-Mapping5.jpg
 http://www.um-smart.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/12-2-7_Manila-Mapping.jpg

The project had another event on March 13 and the target area was the
 Ortigas CBD.

So this April 21 event is just another one in a series of events for
the New Mobility Project (NeMo). This time the target is non-motorized
transport (i.e., cycling) and the groups invited are cycling advocates
 like the Firefly Brigade.

I hope many of you can come. :)

Hello all,

[crossposted to various groups]

As you may know the OSM Foundation has lots of terribly boring-sounding
working groups and the Strategic Working Group is possibly the most
boring-sounding of the lot.

However... occasionally we do things that are not stultifyingly boring and
this might be one of them.

We are trying to get soundings as to how you, the community, want OSM to
grow in the months and years ahead. This is not a directive imposed from
above, nor a grand scheme to make zillions by becoming the next Facebook;
this is finding out what the mappers, the people who make OSM great, want
to see.

Thus far we've trawled through various mailing lists, the wiki, and so on
to find the ideas that come up most frequently. But we might have missed
some, or you might have had a superb idea which has been ignored so far.

The list so far is at:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/**wiki/Strategic_working_group/**
Suggestion_reviewhttp://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Strategic_working_group/Suggestion_review

Do read it; and we would welcome your further suggestions on the
'Discussion' page.

The important bit is that we are looking to collate suggestions about OSM's
future _strategy_. For example:
* OSM should grow the mapper base
* OSM should make special efforts to reach out to the developing world
* OSM should develop osm.org into a consumer-facing map site to rival
Google Maps
...or not.

We are not looking for operational suggestions (e.g. OSM should rewrite
the editor in HTML5). OSM is a do-ocracy and the way you get operational
suggestions through is by doing them. :) Nor are we making judgments, or
seeking opinions or debate, about the suggestions quite yet - just
collating them.

Knock yourselves out. :)

cheers
Richard

Those barriers come and go, maybe it depends on the mood of the traffic

Hi Marloue,

JP Laurel should generally be a two-way, single-carriageway. there are
only cats
eyes/lane markers there, no center islands nor barriers (like those in
front of
Victory Mall)...

dual carriageways that are not really one in reality will make
navigator suggest
routes that loops or other paths directly opposite the lane due to the
presence of
the barrier or ways not linked to the other carriageway.

I already found the error before I came there (to Bajada View in front
of SSS
Bajada) and verified if JP Laurel is really a dual-carriageway. the
only segment
of Laurel as dual-carriageway is in front of Victory Mall (where a
no-left-turn to
the service road should be placed), near the Bajada Interchange and a
segment near
C.M. Recto.

on East Avenue, it's really a dual-carriageway with center island and
steel
barriers in the middle, recently passed there again last saturday just
to eat at
Little Quiapo. I only remembered i have to add a no-left-turn from
Matalino to
East Ave (then use a U-turn slot to get to EDSA). I've no updated info
on NIA road
though but I remember it as dual-carriageway with a center island.

lastly, i add errors to openstreetbugs :P

thanks,

- the turn restrictions are new to Davao we will be updating that.

Add the errors here:

Well, I really think the National Highway from Talomo to Ilang in

hi!

anyone based in davao? was there for 2 days (tuesday and wednesday)
again after 7
years and boy, davao is really booming!

Since I already stored the coordinates of my destination prior to my
trips, i
noticed routing errors caused by JP Laurel depicted as
dual-carriageway that
should only be a single-carriageway, 4 lane highway that's actually
davao's main
road

the only segments i noticed where it should be depicted as dual are
those near
the
Bajada interchange, and portions near Victory mall (where turn
restriction should
also be placed) and probably near C.M. Recto near Marco Polo

another such road is C.P Garcia leading to the airport and probably
portions of
davao-agusan highway

Davao City has great coverage but routing is problematic due to the
dual-
carriageways (a similar case in Cebu City's Archbishop Reyes)

Hope we
