You could load this as a kml type file in openlayer and then let
people drag the shape around, but I've never tried to do anything
exactly like that...

Is really cool.

I had thought about doing something like that with letting users trace
anything on OSM (e.g. a large park) and being able to see it on another
location (e.g. compare it to the size of a park near their home).

Thanks :)
That what I was looking for, CNN & facebook grumbling, and news papers
are not able to properly digest it.

Good thing that oil floats. And its great to hear that the volume is
finally being contained with less 'uncontrolable flow'.

Like a water main leak, 'duck tape' doesnt help, as there is no
'cut-off' valve.
Like my volcano example earlier, its like trying to stop a lava flow
(which cannot be stopped). It can only be 'redirected' to follow the
path of least resistance. Mother nature built the containment shell,
which got broken as soon as the well was initially dug.

Anyway, happy that people are mapping it :)

Not only that, but people are mapping blooms in 3D under the water:

That isn't mapping, that's making projections based on currents and
stuff, you'd need a lot of fluid dynamics to keep up with it all, not
exactly the kind of thing OSM, or the current crowd (which isn't
unlimited -- there is only about 10k-12k active mappers) is really
suited to.

Negative thinking aside, just listing WHERE it is, is important to know.

Zooming out, its easy to keep 'close' as that is all thats needed,
using whatever imagery is available.

We have unlimited crowd source, who can map anything anywhere. And it
is 'stuck to the ground'. And we can also help the responders focus on
areas that need to be protected.

This is a perminant area transformation like a 'volcano lava flow'.
Where the area will be a perminant sedement area, and needs to be
known.

Does anyone know if it is already being mapped?

Given that the spill is constantly expanding, mapping it would become a
full-time job if you wanted the information to be anywhere close to up-to-date.

Hi,
is anyone mapping the spill, showing the area?
Does anyone know of Public Domain imagery available?

The area is no longer a nature preserve, but an 'industrial area'. Or
'liquid_waste' or something.

Thanks,
Sam
