[talk-au] City of Melbourne data imports
Hi guys, I'm working with the City of Melbourne on some open data projects. www.theage.com.au/it-pro/government-it/an-open-data-vision-20140818-105d5n.html One thing we could do is import some of their data into OSM. For example: - water fountains - addresses - businesses - trees I haven't done any automated imports before, but I'm sensible enough to go through the procedures, triple check that we're not duplicating existing data etc. Just wanted to check what you think of this idea, and whether anyone has worked with CoM data before? Hi Steve, There is a lot of open data that could potentially be used from data.gov and state portals. http://www.data.gov.au/ https://www.data.vic.gov.au/ http://data.sa.gov.au/ Much of this was released for the govhack competition last month. No idea about the process of importing data but try and ensure that you add tags to say where the data came from, what licence it was released under etc. On Tue, Aug 19, 2014 at 3:50 PM, Steve Bennett stevag...@gmail.com wrote: Hi guys, I'm working with the City of Melbourne on some open data projects. www.theage.com.au/it-pro/government-it/an-open-data-vision-20140818-105d5n.html One thing we could do is import some of their data into OSM. It *may* be useful to add a source tag, but that's for mapper convenience, not any legal requirements. You can also indicate source with a changeset tag. ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au

One thing we could do is import some of their data into OSM. For example: - addresses Addresses may be one of the more useful data sets, and you might want to look at things like openaddresses.io as well - though I did open up a pull request for VicMap data. A similar import is http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Import/Catalogue/NYC_Buildings_Addresses - speaking to folks on the imports list will be useful, as there are undoubtedly lessons learned etc that are applicable. If they have the data, building footprints are also pretty neat. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Geelong_Building_Import is one I did a few months ago - some of the geospatial team there are dead keen on open data and would no doubt be happy to talk with their melbourne counterparts as well. ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au

Oh, and I nearly forgot: one of the issues with data is bitrot - you'll want to think about not only the initial data import, but how best to keep it up to date. I've found subscribing to a feed of data from planningalerts.org.au is a good indicator for when housing or addresses in my area are possibly going to be invalidated.
