So I suspect it's potentially breaching copyright, and a matter of
judgement as to whether it's worth the risk. For example, if you
were copying in data from a commercial web site whose business
model was based around that data (like a listing of pubs) you
might get yourself and OSM into some trouble. On the other
hand, copying in some basic contact details for a local church
or restaurant off their own web site is unlikely to cause any
trouble!

Exactly that.

If you want a very very broad rule of thumb, you could ask am I checking
these contact details against a database of contact details?.

If so (e.g. tesco.com list of their stores, beerintheevening.com list of
pubs, etc.), then don't do it.

If not (e.g. an individual 'contact us' page on a one-off shop), you'll be
fine.

I have a rule of thumb about this: if I've checked against the website
of the business/church/organisation I add this link in a tag in addition
to any address/name info. I hope this a) offers a degree of reciprocity;
and b) enables other mappers to find the same details for verification.
In general I do this to check some specific details, working out the
denomination of inner city churches is often a bit tricky, and I might
check things like the postcode against my deduction from CodePoint Open.

Other times I'll do this are when photomapping is inappropriate, so the
website is giving what the ad-men call 'prompted recall'.

[Talk-GB] More UK transport data being opened up

2011-07-07 Thread Kev js1982
From today's Guardian

http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2011/jul/07/government-transparency-data-releases

The transport data looks like it might have some use for OSM and related
projects

   - Data on *current and future roadworks* on the Strategic Road Network to
be published from October 2011, and subject to consultation to extend this
during 2012 to Local Authority Streetworks Registers maintained under
   statute.
   - All remaining Government-owned free datsets from Transport Direct,
including *cycle route data *and the *national car park database* to be
made available for free re-use from October 2011.
   - *Real time data on the Strategic Road Network* including incidents,
speeds and congestion to be published from December 2011.
   - Office of Rail Regulator to increase the amount of data published
relating to service performance and complaints by May 2012.
   - *Rail timetable* information to be published weekly by National Rail
   from December 2011.

There's already work going on behind-the-scenes with this - there's a
lot of interesting data that's been collected that I reckon will be
useful for us, not just cycle routes.

Rail timetable information to be published weekly by National Rail from
 December 2011.

If this is true, it's fantastic - there's a lot of stuff I would like
to do with mashing up OSM and timetable information. I don't think
it'll help us directly though but it's certainly of interest!

Cheers,
Andy
