Seemed like it to me

Thanks for looking into it

Well, it's only better if someone goes to the (technical and legal)
trouble of getting the data into a format which can be used by OSM.

On the surface, they don't look amenable to providing full data sets,
and there are some requirements for reproduction of copyright notices.
I'm not sure OSM can respect that properly.

Anyway, if someone wants to pursue this, let me know. I can probably
get you in touch with some people in the city's legal office. I know
some people who used to work there.

OK, so that's a "yes" on Du Page?

> So, are you able to upload the data from the city?

No.

1. It's not in a format that I can readily use (I don't know about
   conversion)
2. It's not clearly legally available.

Ok, so I've waited three weeks for responses, and these are what I have:

Two contributors said 'yes', several didn't respond, and one said that
uploading data from Chicago GIS* would be better

about Dupage county, user_5788 said "I've done most (all?) of the Dupage
county mapping out there. _Most_ of what I've done is streets (a few
parks and bike trails are also tossed in there), and I'm sure that
loading the Tiger data there would be a lot faster than me continuing
to ride around on my bike. So I'm up for replacing my stuff with Tiger
data. It'll definitely make it easier to add all of the other landmarks
I know about in the area."

So, are you able to upload the data from the city? I don't know what
licensing restrictions they have, or its in a compatible format.

Yeah, that's the trouble with the TIGER data. Its coverage is
excellent, but the quality can be worse than what's there. So, do you
throw away good, incomplete maps? Or do you throw away newer more
human-reviewed existing data?

I mostly just want to make sure everybody is on the same page and that
we don't destroy anybody's ability to work.

Not sure whats considered 'decent', most (but not all) of the major
roads are mapped on the north side, and south side is
empty besides the highways.

I'll message nearby people and any recent contributors I find. I live
in the near north suburbs, so I'm not really familiar with Du Page or
Kane county (well, besides bad experiences being lost).

I've avoided Chicago myself because I know there's actually a pretty
decent amount of good data already. I've actually done a wee bit of
mapping there myself, too.

So, if you want the Chicago TIGER data, can you make an effort to find
some of the big contributors in the area and see what they think about
uploading TIGER data?

While you're at it, can you see about Kane and Du Page? I know there's
at least a bit out there, too.

In that case, can the Chicagoland area (Cook County) be uploaded soon
also? Not sure how much of an interest you'd like, but there's at least
two potential contributors around here who wouldn't mind the help

I say wait for the TIGER data to show up, but I'm biased. ;)

If you want your area uploaded now, just tell me the county names, and
I'll have it uploaded in a couple of hours.

[Talk-us] TIGER Map Updates

2007-12-29 Thread Ian Dees
Hi there,

I just spent a few hours working on Milwaukee, WI and started browsing the
wiki. I noticed that someone is importing TIGER line data. I didn't get the
impression that anyone was positive about whether pre-existing OSM data
would be merged with TIGER data or if one or the other would get erased or
duplicated.

Should I keep making changes to the map or should I wait for the TIGER data
to show up?

-Ian
