It's been a while since I've attempted any sound programming on the XS,
and, believe it or not, I've never used the MoTools editors. Perhaps I
should. Anyway, here's what I want to do.
I want a basic wave form, I.E. square or sawtooth, triangle, etc. to go
through 8 amplitude steps. The sound would start at 0, then each step of
the decay would drop the amplitude by roughly 6 DB, until it reaches the
end of the 8 step sequence, then it terminates. In other words, not a
smooth linear sustain/decay, and if the LFO is powering this, it would
be a one-shot. I would then run this sound through the bit/sampling rate
effect on the motif at 8-bit to make sure it quantizes properly.
I would like to use the mod wheel or some other controller to adjust the
speed of the steps.
So, I would need at least two modulators mapped in the mod matrix, one
for amplitude and one to control the speed. What I'm not sure about is
how to program the steps. Would I even use an LFO for that, or the arp
generator? If the latter is the case, then that part of the mod matrix
becomes irrelevant.
I don't particularly like the sampled synth wave forms on the Motif XS,
but out of everything I have available to me in hardware, it's probably
best suited for the task. The LFO's are not flexible enough on my Korg
Microkorg or my Arturia MicroBrute, though, by their nature, the wave
forms are much nicer. If I had something that would respond to analog CV
gate, and start an LFO cycle on each pulse, and step as well, I could
patch that to amplitude through the MicroBrute's semi-modular patch bay.
A bit overkill, though.
I could probably manage it with my Ensoniq TS-12 minus the 8-bit effect,
though that's easy enough to come by in both hardware and software for
me. I never quite figured out how to program Ensoniq transwaves though.
