I had the system hard drive fail, and installed 16.04. I am getting used to it. But the default file manger does not allow tabs with different directories. Am I missing something, or has this feature indeed been removed. Now I was using a Gnome shell before. Reverting is a consideration.

So I have happily been using mediatomb for years. But I upgraded to 18.04 and it has been unsupported, and worse the upgrade deleted the binary! :( I tried compiling from source, but that is a bigger learning curve that I am up for at this time. I tried miniDLNA. Setup was easy. No errors.
