2011-01-21 Thread kathy nichols
Hi Nelson,
I am one of the tbuggers that recommended the Blake/Rice 2 CD. If you
are enjoying Norman's mandolin playing, there is a Homespun tape (and
probably a DVD now) with a number tunes played and demonstrated by
Norman and his wife Nancy. One of the tunes they dissect is Father's
Hall, which is #4 on the 2 CD. At one point, Norman displays, talks
about, and plays some of his different mandolins. It's fun hearing
his take on the music and watching him play up close.

I grew up in a household with practically no music, except for Top 40 radio.
It was only much later in life that I have found some of my favorite
musicians and music forms. For example, I never had listened to Bill Monroe
 until around 2002 or 2003, I think.

When O Brother was in full swing, Norman Blake came to my local
university. I read about the upcoming event and had no idea who he was, so
I made the conscious decision not to go. If I'd had someone to mentor me
about American music as a youngster, I would have surely been there in the
 front row.

I learn best with a multi-fold example. Maybe tab, plus a video or mp3. If one
won't work the other usually will, at least for me.

I don't think we should confine it to bluegrass. I think adapting Mike's style
to all formats is the way to go (mostly since I play OT but insist on playing
melody along with the fiddle and not just strum chords).

That being said, I'm pretty much agreeable to anything not involving Kanye West
or Lady Gaga.

Good one Don! I think we need to do a song of the month type deal over here in
Taterland. Maybe if we include Tater hisself it would kick off pretty good.
Call a tune, have someone do a recording on Youtube and at the end of the month
everyone else puts up their version. Just a thought.

Going forward I think it would be cool if someone would volunteer to
post a tune at the beginning of the month and everyone else would
learn or build on that tune. For the first one, it might be easiest to

As we buggers are all unassuming people, I suggest that DicTater
starts it off, and then we use the month for meaningful debate on the
next song, while we work on the current one, as well as refining our
Groucho Mask technique. In that way we will have our collective right
and left brain in harmony, and therefore karmic forces will descend
and universal creativity will take over our minds.
Or is that too ambitious?

Good one Don!  I think we need to do a song of the month type deal over
 here in
Taterland.  Maybe if we include Tater hisself it would kick off pretty
 good.
Call a tune, have someone do a recording on Youtube and at the end of the
 month
everyone else puts up their version.  Just a thought.

Then pick a tune either already on the tube or slap one up there and
we'll get after it. I would suggest to the participants to get their
submissions up whenever they're good that way some of the folks that
might need longer have more to listen to. Just a thought. Tater, when
you get one picked, let's start a new topic called SOTM-December 2010
and any questions or submissions can get attached to it. Get after it!

Happy preTurkey Day folks.

some Monroe tunes you have written out already. Any tune will have

2010-11-23 Thread Don
I like it! I participate some in the SAW (song a week) group at the
Mando Cafe, but it takes me longer than a week to get anywhere with a
tune.

Good one Don!  I think we need to do a song of the month type deal over here
in Taterland.  Maybe if we include Tater hisself it would kick off pretty
good.  Call a tune, have someone do a recording on Youtube and at the end of
the month everyone else puts up their version.  Just a thought.

Yes, I am behind in my goal.  I have been working on some old time
tunes, and will get one out pretty soon.  Shelvin' Rock it is fast becoming
a favorite and will probably be the one.
