Has anything changed in the threading algorithms recently?

Threading seems a shadow of its former self. I can't say just WHEN this occurred, but I am running 1.60n right now, and several mailing lists have horrible threading with orphaned articles galore. I have checked my settings haven't changed, I still sort on message creation time and view threads
