The Bat! v2.03 Beta/24 is now available

2003-12-25 Thread Stefan Tanurkov
Hello All,

The Bat! v2.03 Beta/24 is now available from
  http://www.ritlabs.com/en/tbbeta/

The major fix is that editor randomly popping back after immediate
sending. :-) Here is the change list:

[-] Fixed a bug of Beta/10 of editor window opening again after
successful transmission of a message in a newly installed copy of The
Bat!
[-] (#0002251) Bug with displaying sorted columns in message list with
a wrong background colour
[-] (#0002237) Bug with using wrong Top/Bottom definitions in the
scrollbar local menu of MicroEd/PTV

There were some more cosmetic changes done. Those who use XP themes
should like them, I hope ;-))

Cheers!

Create new account a little buggy (?)

2003-12-25 Thread Thomas Lieblang
Hi folks - Merry Christmas!

Was this bug reported before?

- create new account
- enter accountname, emailadress etc
- before you 'finish' go ' back'
- a new optionwindow is shown that wasn't shown before
(I have a permanent connection to the net - no dial-up.
maybe this is why the window wasn't shown before)

  then the bug:

- ' back' is still available, but 'next' changed to 'finish' in all
  optionwindows.

Hello,

When I select View threads by References, all folders including all
accounts becoming grouped by references. Same for View Threads by
None. Is this normal? I've created different view modes, but selecting
a View mode for a folder makes no change to message list.

Thanks in advance

I've not yet had a chance to use this, or subsequent betas yet... it is
Christmas after all. To say the least, I'm depressed. Incredibly
depressed to see that RitLabs is now pulling apart the POP3 portion the
TB, the part that seemed to me to be working pretty well, with very few
issues... while IMAP is still flaky at best. Yet, they decided to
rework POP3 to break that (to be honest, based on the postings, right
now I'm glad I use IMAP)... at this rate, the client is going to be very
broken before anything is truly fixed :(

POP3 non-collection

2003-12-25 Thread Marck D Pearlstone
Hi TB Beta list members,

I've seen reports of POP3 stalling at 100%. I'm seeing something
else / worse.

Once in a while, a mail check fails to start. It fails to start
catastrophically. I don't know why - maybe there's a collision in
the LAN here (they happen - I should fix it, but I have more
pressing things to do - a builder's house and all that), maybe the
server stutters (it's a bit under-powered for what it needs to do)..
whatever. One way or another, something goes wrong during the
initial connect phase prior to message collection.

Having stalled at this point, that's it for that account. There's no
timeout. There's no recovery. There's no abort. Nothing will make
that task recover other than a task manager enforced eviction. Often
I don't even notice that the account has been locked out until two
hours later. Or more. The connection centre shows the account trying
to connect still. If I abort or delete the task, the connection
centre clears the task from view but clearly it is still open in
there somewhere; the connection centre remains open and TB refuses
to exit.

I'm set up to leave mail on the server for 1 day. I don't know if
that's relevant.

Whether or not this issue can be reproduced or fixed I don't know.
What is clear to me is that I need a more orderly way to leave TB
when there are unfinished tasks. I need an extra option of Ignore
and exit anyway for any time something goes wrong in the comms.

There should also be timeout protection on all phases of a
communications session, so the locked out issue shouldn't arise.

IMAP, Folder Maintenance, and Purge/Compress folders

2003-12-25 Thread Jonathan Angliss
Hi,

After something Allie said to me today, I decided to take a little
exploring of the IMAP handling in the latest releases/betas. Folder
maintenance doesn't do exactly what it says it's doing in regards to
IMAP. It seems to only be cleaning up the local cached emails, and
not the server. I deduced this as follows:

1. Ran folder maintenance on my whole mail base. It reports it
   saved X bytes of space.
2. Closed TB, started it up using /IMAPTRACE
3. Selected one folder I know I'd deleted multiple emails from
4. Selected Folder, Purge+Compress
5. Checked /IMAPTRACE log files... and I see this:

C: S00196 EXPUNGE
S: * 1 EXPUNGE
S: * 11 EXPUNGE
S: * 15 EXPUNGE
S: * 20 EXPUNGE
S: * 20 EXPUNGE
S: * 20 EXPUNGE
S: * 25 EXPUNGE
S: * 26 EXPUNGE
S: * 25 EXISTS
S: * 0 RECENT
S: S00196 OK EXPUNGE completed

Hang on... how could it expunge that many emails, when I ran folder
maintenance, and it said it'd already done that for me?

6. Deleted an email
7. Ran folder maintenance right after again (selecting the
compress, and purge options in case that wasn't clear)

C: W00205 UID COPY 32 INBOX.Trash
S: W00205 OK [COPYUID 1036787960 32 42869] COPY completed.
C: O00206 STATUS INBOX.Trash (UNSEEN RECENT MESSAGES UIDVALIDITY UIDNEXT)
C: V00207 UID STORE 32 +FLAGS.SILENT (\Seen \Deleted)
S: * STATUS INBOX.Trash (MESSAGES 206 RECENT 0 UIDNEXT 42870 UIDVALIDITY 1036787960
UNSEEN 1)
S: O00206 OK STATUS Completed.
C: O00208 STATUS INBOX.Undernet.Help (UNSEEN RECENT MESSAGES UIDVALIDITY UIDNEXT)
S: V00207 OK STORE completed.
S: * STATUS INBOX.Undernet.Help (MESSAGES 25 RECENT 0 UIDNEXT 34 UIDVALIDITY
1041480648 UNSEEN 0)
S: O00208 OK STATUS Completed.
C: A00209 NOOP
S: A00209 OK NOOP completed
C: C00210 LOGOUT
C: C00211 LOGOUT
S: * BYE Courier-IMAP server shutting down

Well... there's two issues here, it sets the \Seen status on the
email BEFORE it moves it, so if it was \UnSeen, then it'll appear in
the trash that way, irregardless of the option Mark deleted
messages as read (this behaviour differs from POP3 folders).

Well I had left it a good 2 mins after the folder maintenance window
said it was done before I closed TB. Yet no expunge details...
hrm... bug? This might also be why TB keeps seeing old mail when I
delete some other stuff, because it refetches the deleted mails.
Anybody able to confirm this kind of behaviour?

Hello Thomas Lieblang,

on Thu, 25 Dec 2003 22:24:23 +0100 (2003-12-25 22:24:23 in .nl) in the

TL - a new optionwindow is shown that wasn't shown before
TL (I have a permanent connection to the net - no dial-up.
TL maybe this is why the window wasn't shown before)

Info: the window gives you the option to select a dial-up or LAN
connection.

I also have a permanent connection. Following your logic, about those
who (only) have a dial-up connection, why should it pop-up for them,
what's to choose from?

My logic: one could have a LAN (no permanent internet connection) with
email server and clients connecting to it, hence choose a LAN connection
for that account. Additionally, one could have an account which uses a
dial-up connection (either IP mandatory or no direct conection), hence
choose dial-up connection. Conclusion: this window should always be
displayed, or TB must be smart enough to find out by itself. So either
always show it or get rid of it.

TL then the bug:
TL - ' back' is still available, but 'next' changed to 'finish' in all
TL optionwindows.

Confirmed here.

I have been seeing the exact same thing. It happens at least once a day,
not always the same account. Aborting looks like it works but you can't do
a normal shutdown other than Task Manager.

If you don't do a restart of TB, you will receive no mails even though the

 the LAN here

The TCP/IP protocol is designed to handle things like this... if it's
being caused by collisions, then TB has bigger issues.

(they happen - I should fix it, but I have more pressing things to
do - a builder's house and all that), maybe the server stutters
(it's a bit under-powered for what it needs to do).. whatever. One
way or another, something goes wrong during the initial connect
 phase prior to message collection.

Even a server stutter really shouldn't cause any issues... the client
should be able to handle it... if the server reports and error, the
client should be able to report the error, and retry later, not hang
itself indefinitely. Wasn't there a new timeout option added recently?
I thought I saw mention of it, and vaguely remember seeing it too, but
I cannot find it now... if you still have it (or it even exists), what
is yours set to?

Having stalled at this point, that's it for that account. There's no
timeout. There's no recovery. There's no abort. Nothing will make
that task recover other than a task manager enforced eviction. Often
I don't even notice that the account has been locked out until two

centre clears the task from view but clearly it is still open in
there somewhere; the connection centre remains open and TB refuses
 to exit.

Can you pinpoint things going on? Like mail accounts checking at the
same time? Is there anything in your server logs? Do you even see that
failed connection attempt? Have you considered running ethereal
(http://www.ethereal.com/) to watch POP3 connections and see if
anything pops up (pun not intended)? Ethereal will be useless if you
do POP3 over SSL ;)

There should also be timeout protection on all phases of a
communications session, so the locked out issue shouldn't arise.

I could have swore one was put in. But you have to be really careful
when doing this kind of thing.. especially when it comes to networks
and proxy services. The company I used to work for had Wingate as a
proxy server (that was before I got my hands on it)... one person used
to get huge mails (around 100MB) all the time, but Outlook would
timeout because the wingate proxy was handling conversations with the
server, while not talking back to the client... then once the
connection between wingate and the server was done, the whole bunch
was then dumped to the client (an interesting way of doing things I
must say). But I do agree that one should be put on the connection
side of things, or the login phases, and exit phases.
