I somehow managed to end up with a completely empty Edit Mail Message window (see attachment). I'm not sure what triggered this - I selected some text and pressed F4 (Reply with quote), but nothing happened at first. I pressed F4 again, and this time a normal reply window opened, and I sent the message.
