Found the solution: 

In Preferences / Profile Layout: In the Generic Profile all colors were set to 
Auto. But in profiles I created, the colours were explicitly defined. I changed 
all colours in all my profiles to Auto and the Source Viewer sample text came 
back.

Hello everyone,

is anyone else seeing this:
Preferences / Viewer/Editor / Source Viewer: Sample Source Layout

The text area where the sample message source is displayed shows no content in 
any theme.

The Source Viewer itself (F9) seems to be fine, although the background colour 
is always white, also in ChocoDark.
