Re: The Bat! 5.4 MSI files

Hello Maxim,

This probably isn't a bug, but it sure is annoying.

When I type robyn@f tab in the to field quickly I get robyn@f, when I pause
between the f and the tab I get robyn@ fish***.com. I never want robyn@f, I
always want the completed email.

Occasionally and sadly I can't tell you when, you don't change the cursor back

cursor state as the instant I click on the Help menu the cursor changes to
Default and then when I close Help=About it changes back to WaitCursor and
then other times you don't, as when I choose Reply to write this message the
cursor remained WaitCursor.

Also, on the menus Find Next is enabled even when there is no previous search
pattern and fails. Seems like it should just invoke the Find dialog in that
case.

Interesting. Today when I went to shut down my computer, TheBat would not
close. Just ignored clicking the red X and choosing Messages=Exit. Acted as if
I'd done nothing. I then tried using task manager to end the processes and it
shut down properly, did the box with the completion bars running across and
then shut down. So it looks like the problem is app-close message is getting
lost under some conditions. As if you disable it when you're doing something
for safety and then somehow forget to turn it back on. Similar to how the
mouse cursor looses it's state sometimes.

Thanks so much for the answer. I do have that unchecked and the
problem is actually different than I thought.

When a message has no attachments indicated in the list display
but shows an unmarked attachment of message.htm in the message
itself, is there a way to automatically get rid of that. And for
that matter, why is it there and why does it not show up as an
attachment?

Address book weirdness

2018-08-02 Thread Ira
Hello The,

I'm trying to get my wife set up on the bat, but I can't get the
address book to populate. Right click=>Specials=>add sender to address
book does nothing and scanning the inbox and telling it to add
all senders for the last 6 months also does noting, claims there
are no addresses to add. Also, I've told the bat to scan email
address in the inbox to populate the recipient on a new mail
and it fails most of the time.

What to do? If I can't get that to work, she won't let me buy
her a license.

Also, sometimes or maybe always when sending a message new or
resend, the bat automatically creates an attachment, called
message.ht or something like that. How do I make it stop?

Thanks, Ira

But she's use to windows mail and it doesn't have that weirdness. If it's just the message, why show it as an attachment? Why can't I hide if for simple users? Heck I'd hide it for me if I could as it just seems to be noise, same as separating the html and text portions of a message onto different pages. Why can I just have a message tab as that's whats important. Having to remember to check other tabs is onerous as is at some level showing all the embedded images as attachments.  I'd be happy if I could see them if needed but all the time I spend seeing what they are is a waste.

While I agree with you mostly, and I appreciate the Bat for what
it is, it's difficult to hand to a person who's use to a
"normal" email program. The world uses HTML email and like
sticking with DOS after Windows had won, trying to pretend HTML
is not here to stay and has won is a recipe for a dying product.

The Bat is an astonishingly complete product and it does a lot
of things really well, but believing that email should be text
based, while noble, likely insures long term business failure.

Sadly the world has moved on, most of the mail lists I belonged
to have been replaced by forums, many destined to fail because
the membership is to small, a problem lists don't have.

FWIW, the issue with hiding the embedded attachments for my wife
is when she clicks the paperclip to download the promised
attachment, either there was no attachment, just embedded images
or there is an attachment but she has to find it among the 10
items, most of which aren't interesting to her.

Look, I know I'm in a situation that's somewhat akin to trying to
convince a Mac person to switch to Windows, but the point I make
is valid and implementing a "Mail or Gmail or Outlook" style
display choice would make this program much more approachable
to the average person. It would make it much easier for me to
introduce it to my clients, most of them like my wife. For them,
they have no idea there is anything other than HTML mail.

Did finally find that and enable paperclip, but for her, every message has a
paperclip and most have no actual attachments.

Again as I said in the reply to Marck, the world has moved past text email and
not seeing that makes it a difficult program to move simple users to.

Thank you. That's all I'm asking for. I've no desire to make the program less
flexible, I just want a "Friendly" button so when I install it at a clients,
wife included, they don't say, this is to confusing. Heck, most of the time I

But, she has many address books and on my install I get a choice of which
address book to add the email to, on hers it's as if I didn't even ask to have
it added. Except for one of the folders where it does work. To the best of my

OK, now I can explain the second one as it was marked as parked, but no error is generated saying a filter ignored a message because it was parked. But on the other hand, there is no way that message should have been marked parked as the first time that filter fires the message was just downloaded. The only filter that marks messages parked first moves them to a third folder before parking them so that one didn't fire either. Once I removed the parked flag, the filter ran just fine.

I found Send Again when I was adding buttons to the tool bar. I
used that feature in Eudora and it brings up the current message
as a new outgoing message able to be edited and and then sent.

I have send automatically set, so for me, clicking Messages=>Resend
immediately resends the message.

So the actual problem is there are two different Replys both called Reply. One
always quotes everything(Ctrl+R or Message=>Reply) and the other only quotes
highlighted text(F4) but there is no way to tell them apart that I can see.
Given that mess, it seems like a third one should be created that quotes all
unless something is highlighted and then it only quotes the selected text. or
just make it so Ctrl+R works sensibly, quotes everything or only highlighted.
And please name them Reply Minimally and Reply Maximally or something that
makes some sense. Also, for what it's worth the Item, "Reply to this Address"
can not be added to a custom toolbar.

So there are 12 choices in the customize toolbar tool for reply. I think there
are actually only 4 versions of reply or maybe only 3, Don't use quick Reply so
I don't know if there are one or two versions of that. And many of them do not
have a reply Icon. That makes figuring out what is what really difficult. And
the menu, Message Reply does not show it's shortcut key, nor does it indicate
there is more than one way to reply meaning most people will never understand
how the program works!

While I do understand why some people might want the F4, no or highlighted
quoting version, I have no idea who would want to be stuck with always the
quotes everything ignoring what is highlighted version or as I put it, the
obviously ignoring what I want version..

Lost emails

2019-07-28 Thread Ira
Title: Lost emails

Hello,

I use Mailwasher to pre scan and delete all the spam before downloading. Today I had 11 messages to download after cleaning and 10 of them are gone. Downloaded, but nowhere to be found. Normally, I can quit and restart the bat and they come back, but today I lost all those emails. I've searched by subject, sender and text and not one of them made it into a mailbox. There are a lot of things I can put up with in an email program, but pretending to download and then deleting from the server so they are lost forever is not one of them. I wish I could tell you what happened, but everything seems the same as always.

V 8.8.9.9

Have you taken a look at the account log? It should tell you is they were downloaded, perhaps filtered, and to which folder.

Thank you, I didn't know that existed. And now I know where they went and why, not a Bat problem, a mailing list server problem.

I see no reason to have a list of nested body parts, I just want the email displayed complete. Though I would be perfectly happy with a somewhat hidden way to get that list if I ever see a reason why I might care. It's an email program, just show me the email the way the sender saw it, certainly not as a list of attachments and pieces. If the sender did choose the "paperclip" to attach the file, it's not an attachment and should not appear as such. I'm not trying to understand the structure of emails, I just want to read them.

I'm a user, not an author. I don't care one tiny bit about rules or structures having to do with how email is formatted for transmission. I just want to read, send, organize filter and search my emails.

All that stuff you're arguing about has nothing to do with the users of an email program. If it just reasonably displayed the email without all the tabs and attachments showing all the individual pieces and inline pictures and other noise id would be better at being an email program. It does all the filtering, searching and organizing stuff as well or better than anything, but it falls behind on the most basic requirement of just displaying an email so it's easy to read and understand. I don't care if other programs are broken and make life hard, that's not my problem. It just makes the puzzle a bit harder, but solvable.

There is so much time spent dissecting and arguing about why it works the way it does or why it can't work the way it should, but that's all noise.  Just make it work like every other email program ever written. Or at least make it an option to hide all the noise.

It called itself Eudora, imported all my Eudora stuff, but then I had to use Thunderbird which sucks so I kept using Eudora till it started crashing and then moved to The Bat, something good enough for my needs that I could live with it. But the list of the Bat's idiosyncrasies is is long and troubling and no one seems to care to fix them. You know, really basic stuff like properly displaying a message with text and html.

Then stop showing emails without attachments as having a dozen or more attachments. I can live with messed up display, but having to dig through a list of attachment or tabs of different types of text only to discover I'd already read it all is absurd.  As for that matter is defending it as the best there is and denying it's full of issues. I would never argue its not the best there is, if with the knowledge I have I didn't think that I'd be using something else, but that does not change the fact that it's rather severely broken with seemingly almost no hope of it ever being fixed.

How many customers still use XP? I bet it's in the single digit percent and you're better off leaving them behind. No one who has any inkling of security will still be using XP on an internet connected computer. Decisions like that are probably what will end up killing the product.

Personally I like the Bat, but I just wish you'd fix the bugs and not worry about new features. I'd guess that involves a lot of rewriting sections from scratch given the number of times seeming unrelated bugs pop up after what should have been simple fixes.

I refuse to use online mail and I use the Bat and have just had to accept that you'll never fix the bugs and I just have to put up with the annoyances, but it's not a way to make sure your customer base expands. When people ask me about email programs , I tell them about the Bat, but I always have to include cautions about the weirdness of how it works and the bugs that never get fixed. Give what it is capable of, it should be considered the best and most flexible, but the apparent inability of the programming staff to finish it, keeps it far from being the best choice for quite large percentages of the population.

I do give it a fair chance and I always upgrade, but that doesn't mean it's not broken.  Personally, not one piece of software I've written has any known bugs. I'm embarrassed when bugs get reported in my software and so I make them go away. Sometimes for my embedded stuff that pays bills, at my expense, I jump on an airplane to visit a customer or make new PC boards with a bunch of LEDs so the customer can tell me where the problem happens. I'm not so generous for my freeware, but I rarely let bugs last past the next day. I just couldn't live with myself.  So when bugs in a program I pay for don't get resolved I tend to think the either people at the top don't care or the people writing the code aren't up to the task. But the Bat seem to be the best there is, so I tolerate it's foibles.  But that makes it difficult to recommend.

Yes, I do embedded work. I own the company, so I can do what I want and yes I could afford it, but out of more than twenty thousand users only 5 had the problem so like many other companies, I could have ignored it, but I can't. Companies who don't want bugs, work at getting rid of them. It's a task that has to be done and yet many authors consider it drudge work. I made my living working on custom accounting systems for small businesses fixing other peoples broken code, I think it's fun, that's seemingly rare, but it has to be done.

The Alt key opens the top level menu. After that underlined letters in the menu items are shortcuts that use letters with or without Alt keys. The problem you have is there is no shortcut(underlined letter) to open the Insert menu. To make sure that's correct, I just checked in a VB application I wrote and underlined letters do indeed open nested menus with and without the Alt Key.

If it was me, I'd set the menu up like this so every entry had an underlined letter:

Address Picker
Insert
Character Case
Evaluate
Advance Address Search
Insert Quick Template
Create a Quick template
Attach Personal vCard
Add a File

On the File Menu, Forward as Text and Flags both use "F", Print and Print Preview both use "P"
On the Specials Menu Add Sender and Reply to Sender both use "S", Add Recipient and Create Filter both use "C"

Up and running but I still can't Customize the tools bars. is there any way to get back to version 12 or something where it worked so I can repair my install and then get back to testing again?

I am fully aware of that. I will point out that I've been pointing out functionality that's been removed and seemingly replaced with something that's both not as good, not as full featured and seemingly not near ready for alpha.

I've been on many many betas and alphas starting in around 1985. I'm here to try and help make one of my most important programs better. I repeat myself because I got no replies and that new "feature"  seem to have dramatically reduced the functionality of The Bat. At least it has for me.

This morning I discovered that it's possible using that new feature to create a userdef.xml, attached here, that will prevent The Bat from starting. That was certainly unexpected and took a while to figure out.

But then I don't get to break it and right now it's very broken.

Actually, it's worse than I thought. Every time I try to make a custom toolbar and exit The Bat , it will not start again until I delete userdef.xml. Opening up userdef.xml seems to me to reveal that what it's saving looks nothing like what I thought I created. The format of userdef.xml is a bit unclear, but I'm reasonably sure that's a true statement.

Thank you, this seems to be all better.  Could you please sort the items in the toolbar customizer in alphabetical order. I'm trying to add "Edit as New" and while I know it's there, finding it is an exercise is frustration as there seems to be little rhyme or reason to the order. Conceptually I do understand the order, but since I don't know where that command is supposed to be, the only sensible solution is to alphabetize them or add a way to search.

Hello Maxim,

So I finally figured out I can use that thing that pops up when I do customize to drag buttons around, which is slightly better than nothing, but there is no way I can see to insert a separator and lots of the old selections are not there. OK, I figured out how to add a separator, but it's not very obvious.

I still can't see how to add an icon to a button with none and I can't find what used to be, "Reply quoting only selected text" or forward quoting only selected text. Seems like maybe a new macro in addition to $Quotes that is "quote selected only."  It's just often impolite to quote a whole message when you're only replying to one point, especially if the last person quoted the whole bloody weekly dump.

Also, when I choose forward, the formatting of the text is lost and it's all word wrapped into noise. I believe that's the $Text macro. Maybe ther also needs to be a $Formatted macro that retains formatting.
