Re[2]: 9.2.2.1 PRIVACY violation: The Bat! inserts local hostname (from LAN) instead of IP in brackets

2020-07-29 Thread Alexander Petrari via TBBETA
Hello,

> The Bat! has a privacy issue which could reveal internal structure of a
> company LAN.

This topic is more complex than it might look like at the first glance. There
are way too many SMTP-servers which deny connections if the email client uses
something like [192.68.1.20] during the handshake. In order to avoid such issues
The Bat! uses legal means and carries out a reverse DNS lookup and uses the
domain name associated with the source IP-address during the handshake with the
SMTP-server.

Although revealing the domain name might look like the lack of anonymity, in
reality it is the originating IP-address (which is anyway included in the
headers by the mail server itself) that makes the sender lack anonymity.

You can still disguise the domain name in the settings of your local hardware,
but there is nothing you can do to prevent the mail server include the
originating
IP-address.

Please get this updated archive for the 64-bit version:

Extract its contents into the folder where The Bat! is installed, typically

Run The Bat! and get acquainted with Chromium.

Can anyone confirm there are no issues with the archive for the 32-bit version?

Since v9.0 The Bat! uses the userdef.xml file (userdef.xme under OTFE) to store
the interface settings. The tbuser.def file is no longer used.

We are unable to replicate under OTFE the issue you are experiencing. Please
records a video of your actions, maybe there is a scenario we haven't thought
of. Furthermore, please use the /DECRYPT_FILE_OTFE command line parameter to
decrypt the file userdef.xme and send us the decrypted file for analysis.

2018-12-12 Thread Alexander Petrari via TBBETA
Hello,

We have re-worked the message tags feature, here are the main changes:

The window for selecting tags has been re-designed:
https://www.ritlabs.com/download/files3/the_bat/beta/int_1.png
1) selecting tags is now simpler
2) the list of tags is alphabetically sorted and as time goes by you get used
to the positioning of the tags in the list
3) the colors of tags are displayed in the message list taking into account the
settings of the color groups if any are applied to the respective messages
4) double-clicking a tag will add/remove it
5) it is possible to sort tags in the list (move up/down)

Editing tags: https://www.ritlabs.com/download/files3/the_bat/beta/int_3.png
1) the default colors are there on the palette below "Auto".
2) if you do not assign your own colors to a tag, it will use the default colors
3) the tags preview lets you know how the tag will look like in the message list

Tags settings: https://www.ritlabs.com/download/files3/the_bat/beta/int_4.png
1) an simpler way to set tag colors for even/odd rows
2) we added the button "Reset" to restore the default tags settings
3) tags preview (as they are displayed in the message list)

Hello,

Gwen> You should try it over some hours with a period of 3-5 minutes.

Indeed, if you try to get mail every 5 seconds, for instance, then you'll get:

 17.08.2018, 15:29:58: FETCH - receiving mail messages
 17.08.2018, 15:29:58: FETCH - Connecting to POP3 server securepop.t-online.de

!17.08.2018, 15:29:58: FETCH - TLS handshake failure. An existing connection
was forcibly closed by the remote host

However, if you check for new mail less frequently, then no such error message
appears. Doesn't that mean the mail server refuses to accept too frequent
connections rather than a bug in The Bat!?
