Re: 9.3.4.7
S> Well, it means adding a new option. Why do you think it's needed? Well, for instance because you may be sending to a mailing list where HTML is not accepted or not appreciated (hint, hint), or because you are sending a message to a server that will process it automatically, but only if it's in plain text. Or simply because you as the user want to be in control of how your messages go out. Some people don't even consider html messages to be email because technically, the html part is an attachment. Or they hate Microsoft who forced html (and so, lots of fraud, deception and malware due to manipulated URLs) on email users. There are many reasons! :) S> but pasting/inserting a picture should change format, the logic is pretty simple here. Good. >> While I have you: Do these "Up and Running" messages serve any useful >> purpose for you? If you do not need them, it would save a lot of traffic if >> we stop sending them. S> Yes, they are useful - it's much better than just a silence because we know that people actually tried to use it and it didn't fail to start :-) But that's precisely when a beta tester should send you a bug report! Anyway, I'll just keep ignoring those messages :-) Best, -Daniel- 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re: 9.3.4.7
Hi Stefan, S> That's the idea actually - to switch to HTML from plain text S> automatically once any HTML-specific feature is required. Sounds like a nice feature, but can it be turned off too? And do users keep the option of setting format (plain text or html) manually? When I drag and drop an image onto the editor, I may just want to add it as an attachment rather than include it in the body. While I have you: Do these "Up and Running" messages serve any useful purpose for you? If you do not need them, it would save a lot of traffic if we stop sending them. Re: Questions on the Bat at the mailto url
Hello Ethan, E> That does not work. There are two registry entries that must both point to the same mail client: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Clients\mail > (Default) value = The Bat! HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail > (Default) Value = The Bat! Having said that, this is a beta test group (to the benefit of the developers), not a technical support group (to the benefit of users). Re: Annoying interaction between MinToTray and Ticker
M> I use a 3rd party tool called StrokesPlus to summon and dismiss TB M> with a mouse stroke that emits the system hotkey defined in the TB M> system hotkeys Why? I have The Bat set up to minimize to the system tray as well (and not to the task bar), and to call or dismiss the program, I simply click on that system tray icon. You may well have identified a bug, but to establish that more firmly, I think you should remove the third-party tool from the equation and see if the problem still occurs without it. Re: HTML rendering
T> Good point, but we all use the same firewall / anti-virus The question is if they treat Outlook and The Bat the same or not. Anyway, let's see first if Ritlabs can reproduce your delay. Best, -Daniel- 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re: HTML rendering
T> However, it is more a workaround than the fix of the problem. My suggestion was not specific to your problem. Servers and connections can be slow, unresponsive or unavailable at any time and this is not under The Bat's control. Pre-rendering would be the best solution to address that; it would allow the user to read the message right away. I'm not sure how feasible it would be to implement though, because not all dimensions of the images may be known until the images (or their headers) have been downloaded. As to your problem, delays like this can also be caused or triggered by firewall and antivirus software. 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Wouldn't it be possible to pre-render slow pages quickly with place-holder images, until the full images have been retrieved? Plain text formatting
>> If I insert a hard line-break by hitting at the end of a >> line and press at the start of the next line, it means that I >> want the text on that new line to start indented away from the >> window edge. Heartily agreed! :-) S> I'm afraid, you do not understand what plain text is - it's just a S> raw text with no formatting hints other than characters with S> variable widths and line breaks. To me, tabs, spaces, carriage returns and line feeds are part and parcel of 'plain text'. They should not be ignored, replaced or erased. (except maybe for any useless trailing tabs/spaces at the ends of lines) In the old days, plain text 'formatting' never led to any problems because all we had was fixed-width characters. And frankly, I think MicroED should not use any proportional fonts either. I don't see how it makes sense to use proportional fonts in a plain-text editor. A text file that truly has no formatting at all -just endless lines that each represent a paragraph- used to be called 'flat text'. Again in the old days, if you were writing a book or an article, you often had to submit flat text so that an editor could import it in his publishing software and format it himself. S> Tabs have no meaning for plain text with variable width characters S> because there is no way to define tab stops. If no other tab size has been set, it should default to 8 spaces wide. S> Paragraph indents and margins cannot be defined for plain S> text either. They can, simply by indenting the text with tabs and/or spaces! Provided that you use a fixed font, of course! :] S> If you want to use all this typography stuff in email, S> you have to use HTML at least, Boo, hiss! HTML is an attachment, not e-mail. Shame on Microsoft for foisting HTML upon us. I hope that MicroEd in The Bat v9 will work just like it does in v8. It isn't perfect but at least it does allow for some basic forma^H^H^H^H^H structuring. Best, -Daniel- 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Re: 9.1.18.7
M> [..] longer standing issue I have that nobody here was able to confirm. In those circumstances the cause is probably something quite unique to that particular system. Have you tried starting Windows in Safe Mode to disable a bunch of drivers and services that might be interfering? Personally, in this case I would be suspicious of mouse and video drivers (I don't know if Safe Mode replaces those with plain vanilla Microsoft versions.. you may have to do so manually). Another possibility might be that you have something odd in your reply templates (and other templates)? A common cause of 5-10s delays is when Windows tries to access a device (like a disk drive) that is asleep due to energy saving - but if that was it, the problem would be intermittent. Re: Kinda roadmap ;)
Hi Stefan, >> https://www.ritlabs.com/en/auth-forums/forum4/topic14455/ S> This one must be resolved when we start using Chromium engine. Both S> rendering engines used in The Bat! now are outdated beyond repair, I'm afraid. Thanks, but are you sure that the rendering engine is involved here? The problem, in short, is this: When a person adds a Gmail account to The Bat, and he chooses OAuth authentication, Internet Explorer will show a screen in which the user must press an 'Allow' button. The problem is that this Allow button is greyed-out and cannot be pressed. Best, -Daniel- 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Kinda roadmap ;)
Hi Stefan, good to see you return to the bat's nest and I'm glad that The Bat's development will get a new impulse. I've seen quite a few fixes of inconveniences and annoyances requested, but I think the pita that deserves priority is the one that, for quite a few people, causes The Bat to not work at all with Gmail: https://www.ritlabs.com/en/auth-forums/forum4/topic14455/ Best of luck, kind regards, -Daniel- 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
