Verify OpenPGP signatures is currently only working intermittently for me. I
spotted this with v9.2.3 so I updated to v9.2.3.4 but the issue remains. When I
click the button to verify the OpenPGP signature on a signed message, I seem to
have two possible outcomes.

1. Sometimes, I get "Access violation at address 004AEF5B in
module'thebat64.exe'. Read of address ."

2. Sometimes I get "OpenPGP verification Error" with an empty "Program output"
window.

I have also found that deleting the signature key from my keyring made a
message switch from outcome 1 to outcome 2, and re-importing the signature key
made the message switch back to outcome 1.

The issue is with messages that are just signed, not encrypted.

Can anybody confirm?

Oh I see, so GnuPG continues to be not really user-friendly and to be
something only for nerds... That's a pity.

The GnuPG installation doesn't provide an empty dirmngr.conf file. If you
need/want one, you create it in the same directory as gpg.conf.

The GnuPG website recommends that applications use the GPGME API rather than
GnuPG's command line interface.

And I thought the default was changed to keys.openpgp.org last year in the
light of the SKS keyserver attacks. So you shouldn't need to specify if you
want to use that keyserver, at least until the default next changes.

The problem is that not all users upload to keys.openpgp.org.
The old SKS keyxserver had keys which were never authorized and could
be faked/overwritten by others.
SKS is not trusted anymore.

It's already on the public GnuPG key server which is used by gpg by default :-)

I guess we need some help from gpg experts here because it's not clear what's
missing.
Currently, we're using this command line for verfication:

'C:\Program Files (x86)\GnuPG\bin\gpg.exe --batch --display-charset utf-8
--armor --verify'

Please tell me what's missing here. So far, I could make gpg search for keys on
the server by adding `auto-key-retrieve` key to gpg.conf. I believe I tried
doing this before and it didn't change anything, but today somehow pgp started
looking for public keys... Is there any other way (command line switch) to make
it work as before?
